Title: Jist fer Grins, Old Club Pix
Post by: Randy Ryan on March 12, 2009, 08:08:26 PM
This is of all things, the Michgan R/C Society, even though we flew everything. This pic was take in front of the Farmington Hobby Shop in Farmington Michigan in 1965. On the far left, behind the little guy holding the flying barrel is one Jerry Brach, better known as Jerome Brach, those of you that have built the Lil' Wizard have seen his picture on the kit box lid. Carl Goldberg refused to pay royalties, so Jerry settled for his picture on the box. Next guy to the right is your's truely with the then stylish "waterfall" hair holding a foam winged bipe of myown design. Over to the right, the man with ART on his sweater is my Dad, my mentor, my hero and lifelong flying buddy. And last, directly below "suppies" in the window is Bill Parker, the manager and our sponsor, he's holding a polyhedral winged Free Flight. I have RC, FF and CL models in the picture and I had the honor of being the president of the club in '66 when I was 16.

One more person of note, some old FFer's may recognize the name, 5th from the left with the F on his jacket is Ken Phare, Ken was a strong FAI F1A flyer for a number of years, not sure what he's up to now.

Dig out your old club shots and let's see 'em!

I would post a pic if I had one.  The two clubs I belonged to over the years never had a group picture.  DOC Holliday

Thanks Keydet... I do remember the RDC well... luckily I escaped with only one midnight rendezvous , the worst were the coat hanger swats by my Dykes room mates.. ... I have seen recent pics of the new addiction to the Insta-Root.. and had done some reading on Bunting ... an experience you never forget..

I had to get a permit to store the plane which I brought back from a Christmas break..

Steve what are you flying these days?

Jim

Hey CatDaddy / Elwyn - that's no hippie picture! The hair doesn't even tuoch the shoulders and you can't see through the jeans.  That snap sure flipped a sitch in my brain though - all of a sudden I was right back there, about 1977 in Grand Forks N.D.
I was building a Scientific P-40 on a card table in the 1st apartment I shared with some buddies, Led Zepplin III blasting out of a pair of giant Altec Lansings and we were all on dope. Mine favorite was Aero-gloss and theirs was some off brand from Mexico!  I think there was a bit of cross pollination / out gassing going on between the different brands, the music never sounded better.
I have a picture of me standing in the yard at that place that looks almost identical to the one of Elwyn, except I'm holding that beautiful (to me) P-40 painted Fokker Red with black sunbursts, and my hair is curled up a couple inches at the shoulder, topped off by a stylish black farmers cap. Good times!!!
I'll have to find that pic and scan it for posting- we've come a long way baby (remember those TV ads?).

Yeah, I guess my old room (389,289,189) is gone thanks to the new eyesore, errr, addition.  My Ringmaster lived in the top of Scott Ship hall in the CWRT room to avoid the flak of getting a permit.  I don't think I have a pic of it on the parade deck, but I should check.  The tac thought the plane was awesome and was bummed when it flamed out of a wingover and busted the tail off of it.  He wanted it to fly all afternoon!

Hey Bill! If you do find that picture, make sure you post it in the half A forum as well!

Trying to boost support over there.

Hey, another thought... I am pretty sure I was listening to Zepplin and Stevie Ray Vaughn while building a few of my hollow logs. We might be close in age!
