Jim Van Loo's Chipmunk vs Super Chipmunk??
« on: October 20, 2011, 06:55:07 AM »
Hi guys,
I know there is a lot of info about the two Chipmunk's but my Question is?? Which one is the best?? Was there any mods to the first, Van Loo's Chipmunk?? I've build and flown both planes and just received another of the original Jim Van Loo's Chipmunk. I just loved the first chipmunk, great plane and a lot of fun, when I was living in Olympia Washington someone liked it better than me cause they took it home with them?? I used a fox 35 in that one, I believe my new one will have a OS 40 FSR on a mac's pipe system. I guess it won't be a stock plane cause I'll have to make the fuse a little deeper to hide the pipe?? I still have Mr. Walter Hick's old Super Chipmunk hanging in the garage, that he flew at the Golden State Contest many many years ago?? He was using a great Super tigre 46. I appreciate any input about mods to the Mr. Jim Van Loo's First Chipmunk.

Which is best?  I'd say both.  I've built two Van Loo Chipmunks (one Sig CL-3 and one from plans) and also built one Sig CL-26(?) Super Chipmunk.
All flew very well.  I prefer the original, but that's probably because it's the last I built and still flying.

Hi Gary;

I've never built a Van Loo Chip, but am on my second Super Chip. The first flew very well; tight corners and unwavering level flight. The one under construction has many of the Dave Fitz mods: equal panel wing (span now 54 3/4"), fuse is 3' longer and the stab/elevator has about an inch more span. I've had to re-design the rear of the fuse to make room for a Tom Morris adjustable control horn and an access panel . . . the rear of the stock fuse doesn't have much manuvering room.

I've sheeted the wing, first time I've done that, so I'm now sure where the weight will fall. If under 55oz I might install a B-40 in, otherwise an LA 46.

If you do not have a copy of Dave's discription of his mods and would like them, let me know. I got them from Walter, so maybe you already have them too.

The big difference was the Super versions damn cowl. Other wise fine flying models. H^^
The "damn" cowl was something of a female dog to work with, but sure looks nice when done properly. And I don't think the weight is as much of a problem as some suggest.

Put some baffles in to keep the engine cool.  Burned up a really great McCoy .40 Redhead inside one of those plastic SIG cowls. H^^

Hi guys,

I haven't received the plane, its in the mail and you know the rest of the story???? Anyway, instead of Mr. Jim Van Loo of the box, Mr Mike Stott is featured?? Is this another version of the Chipmunk?? Some of the stories I've read states that Jim and Mike are very close friends?? I've seen several pictures of Mike's plane on this forum. The question, did they make a kit of Mike's Chipmunk?? or is this the same plane that Jim flew??? I've got Jim's e-mail address and after I take a close look at the kit, probably have a few questions that I would like to have Jim settle for me. Brian I've had three different Chipmunks and all of them flew great. I don't have Dave's mods and would like to have a set. Missed ya at the field Sunday, flew the Legacy with the RoJett and it looks very nice in the air. I still think my little plane, my mess does a great job, just love the sound of the OS 40 FSR on pipe. Hope to see ya at the field this coming Sunday. Brian, if I get the plane before Sunday, I'll bring her out so we can pick her a part

The Sig Super Chipmunk(CL-26)  has Mike Scott on the box.  The first Sig Chipmunk (CL-3) I think has Jim Van Loo on it
