Title: Jewelry on the P-40.
Post by: Avaiojet on August 28, 2014, 04:55:28 PM
I've been on line looking at P-40 Warhawk's shark's teeth. Thought I'd pick one out for the P-40.

Behold! I can't believe how many different ones there are. No end to them, so, how do you choose? Wisely?

Another thing I just noticed, the eyes are a variety of colors and shapes also.

BTW. My wife coined the word "jewelry."

Edited for content.

As most CL warplanes are semi-scale, I imagine it is just what ever tickled one's fancy. Or was easiest to mimic. Or looked the best. I don't think any if at all would care on accuracy, except for the most discriminating scale buff on a true scale P-40.

George,

Thanks for the reply.

I do want the model's appearance to relate to that of an actual aircraft. If only a bit.

I'm digging.

I doubt if there were two P-40s alike. They were typically painted by a crew chief, or someone else in the group.

I agree, every one was different, some subtle, some not so much. I remember the tail art on our F-106's varied widely though all depicted a red bull head with white horns. These markings were not governed by military aircraft marking regulations so in many cases they were personalized, nose art even more so.

I would bet that any P-40's operated by the AVG in Burma would be painted somewhat differently from a P-40 operated in north Africa. It depends on the Air Force or theater your P-40 paint scheme is from and then the best way to be accurate is to find a photo from that same squadron.

An example of your problem: The pilot of the only P-40 in India was asked why the Japanese said that they were attacked by 4 Squadrons of P-40's.  The answer was "After each flight my crew chief would repaint the spinner a different color."
