Title: Jerry phelps Patriot
Post by: Juan Valentin on June 30, 2016, 05:52:35 PM

I read that the Jerry Phelps patriot was published in Model Aviation and I would like to know in what year and moth was it published. I would like to read about it and see the plans.

June, 2004 issue of Model Aviation, and it can be downloaded -- or I can send it to you.

I would like to thank all that replied to my Jerry Phelps Patriot  inquiry. I went to MA as Steve suggested and looked for the June 2004 issue and read the article and saved the plans in my docs. I had seen the airplane at the 2014 nats but didn`t have an opportunity to talk to Mr. Phelps. It looked to me like a Jim Kosteky design but now I know it`s an original by Jerry Phelps. I have always admired Jim Kosteky`s work and when I was 18 years old I built a Talon. I was not able to finish painting the models as I joined the military. I still have the Talon plans and hope to build another one some day.

Jerry used the original Patriot to earn 3rd place at the 1969 NATs & top spot at the Team Trials that fall.  Thus it is Classic legal.

In fact the latest cover of Stunt News has a picture of Jerry Phelps holding his Patriot next to Lou Wolgast holding his version of Jerry's Patriot at this past Vintage Stunt Championships, taken at the Classic judging session.

Jerry and his patriot have flown at several past VSC's and I believe He finished second one year in Classic in top level competition there.  As I recall Bill Werwage was first.

There was a flyoff in wind that was difficult to stand up steady in.  About the most amazing flying I've ever witnessed!

Both Jerry and his Wife Merry (his ever faithful Pitcrew) are amazing people and Jerry's Patriot is among the best classic airplanes available for stunt flying!

I read the article in MA and he stated that the plane he is flying now was started in 2001 and was finished in2002 in time for VSC. I have seen the plane in person at the nats and is a very beautiful plane. The article in The MA of june 2004 has some nice pictures of he plane and shows him with Bill Werwage and Bob Gieske in a photo of the US F2B team in 1970.

Here are Jerry and Bill at VSC 14 in 2002. I made this up as part of a presentation to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, soliciting an article that was subsequently published. The amazing thing about this particular "Patriot" model is that, after more years of contest use at VSC and Brodak's, this same model won the concours or pilot's choice award again some thirteen(?) years later. I think that the model on the CLW cover is a newly built one, because Merry told me he was working on one, hoping to have it finished by contest time last summer.
