JCT Superbowl Ad

I wonder if you all caught the Jive Combat Team Superbowl spot.  It cost us a pretty penny, but it's a lot of eyeballs on the JCT, and you can't let the brand slip in the off season.

The halftime show was marginally better than the god-awful murderous rendition of the National Anthem by Alicia Keys.

I really have to agree with that.  Why can't someone just sing the song the way it was intended to be sung...with honor and dignity!

This broad was even off-key when she started.  No pun intended.  She had a piano in front of her and still couldn't hit the right note...

And there is no reason they can't - most of these singing girls have great voices. But they have to make it something "special".

Even worse are the people they get to sing "God Bless America" at baseball games. Most people are intimidated by the "Star Spangled Banner" since it's so hard to sing. Any yo-yo thinks they can sing "God Bless America" before an audience. They are wrong. Uncle Jimby, Paulette, and I were watching the World Series at the JimbyDome, and we came to the conclusion that only two people should ever be allowed - Kate Smith, of course, and the other one is Jerry D'Arcy -  a cop from the Tenderloin that sang it at Game 1. He was AWESOME.  ALL of the other GBA singers at in the baseball postseason should never be allowed to sing outside their own shower ever again.

If the dimwits-in-charge wanted to hear the National Anthem and/or God Bless America sung properly, they'd hire Martina McBride or Reba McEntire.

If you don't know those voices, you've been missing something!

The half time looked like nothing more than a huge human spam. WOW! What has entertainment become?

Uncle Mike ----  You are right -on about the singing of our National Anthem. Alicia must have been on something and should be banned from singing it again. The same could be said for so many others including the "nits" that sing before NASCAR. The Anthem becomes all about the AAAAAAAAArtist rather than revering our National Anthem. It makes me ill to watch most of them.

Being almost deaf and having sound turned down during half time,  also missed the National Anthem.   I just like the good looking legs and pretty faces.   Also the start of any of the NASCAR divison races I fast forward thru the intros of people trying to sing.  I record them so I can fast forward thru the commercials.   Now the Super Bowl,  first one I have watched in years, was watched because the wife wanted to see the commercials.   Only two commercials worth watching.

The Clydsdale Colt, The Farmer, and the Goat in that order.

The worst one ever was the disgusting Go Daddy thing...after watching that I couldn't even finish eating my popcorn.

I am happy to hear that I'm not the only one disgusted by the way most celebs try to sing OUR anthem. Ive heard it butchered so many times by those who put their spin on it to make it there own. ITS NOT THEIRS, ITS OURS.
I was at a San Jose Giants baseball game a few years back and some skank tried singing the anthem as if she were trying out for American Idol. She was booed louder than Kirk Gibson at an Oakland A's Old Timer Game.

I enjoyed that game

As should anyone be who insists on stylizing the Anthem.

I have sung the National Anthem at many College sporting events in Colorado, Phoenix and here in Tucson at the U of A.  I always considered it a solemn honor, not a performance to be coveted.
It must have been what they wanted because I was called back many, many times...
Tells me that there are a lot of folks that agree with us.

The Super Bowl is about MONEY and the producers want famous names to impress the advertisers...and the famous names are usually more impressed with themselves than singing.

If you take the National Anthem out of football... I was often solemn this football season. (Basketball season too.) Philadelphia Eagles. Philadelphia 76ers. The Flyers. Serious solemn. I'm afraid of the mood that will happen this summer and spring, when the Phillies play all those games. Doesn't Howard play electric guitar for Beyonce. I thought I saw someone wearing the rubber nose.

Exactly so, Mike. They smell worse than the JCT,  even with Da Dirt included.

I would put up some kudos to the late Marvin Gaye for his rendition of The National Anthem, stylized and all. Normally, I'd agree with you, but he pulled it off quite well, I think.  y1 Steve

The real problem is, the present generation was raised on a steady diet of rock an' roll.  Without any exposure to western pentatonic music, they grew up essentially "tone-deaf".  When those people present an aleatoric reading of our National Anthem, it sounds perfectly good to them.

Musicologists will agree that our National Anthem is difficult to sing.  It encompasses an octave and a fifth, with large jumps. Even trained voices must really pay attention while singing it.

OK, Here's a video of the Star Spangled Banner sung straight.

Did this at a performance of "Damn Yankees" in which I played the character of Joe Boyd.  A different character did it before the start of each show.  This clip was surreptitiously recorded by my brother's lady friend with her cell phone using available light.

p.s. re the SB commercials.  The Dodge commercial featuring Paul Harvey's (a modeler by the way) narrative about American farmers, accompanied by photos of many reminiscent of actual Americans I knew in my youth, was incredibly touching.  When side by side with the "Go Daddy make out slobber" you get just a hint of how far we've come in the last 60 or so years (tongue firmly implanted in cheek).

Given the fact that the JCT membership is roughly the same vintage as the Americans commemorated by Paul I'll have to assume it was their ad.

Here 'tis:
