We've just finished Jake's new plane this past week. Being the throwback
kind of guy that he is (he wears a suit to school about once a week for
goodness sakes) Jake told me last year that he wanted to do some OTS
flying; of course.
The plane is the Dale Kirn designed Stinger built from a Brodak kit and
powered with a Brodak 40. Being the world's biggest Formula One fan,
or rather walking encyclopedia Jake decided to go with an F1 classic
paint scheme: the Gold Leaf sponsored Lotus 49B driven by Graham
Hill circa 1968. To complete the craziness Jake has the great Russian
singer Eduard Khil known for the classic Trololo song (look it up on YouTube)
piloting the plane. He really is so happy to be going home.

Love the great paint scheme and the color choice. That's going to look super in the air....nice!

The ship looks way nice!

Well Steve, I remember when you held Jake in you arms so he could fly...bet'cha can't do that anymore LL~ LL~
Plane looks great Jake...are you coming to VSC to fly it?

We were planning on going to VSC this year, but with the later date we won't
be able to. His Spring Break is the week before, which usually coincides
with the VSC dates. He's a Senior and could probably miss a week of school
without any problem. But, with 5 or mores absences you have to take all of
your final exams. As it is now, with him being in all AP classes and having
good grades he won't have to take any exams. A strong motivator to keep
those grades up and to go to school.

I like the F1 connection even though it clashes with old-crock model aircraft.
My son and I read every issue of F! Racing and Motor Sport from cover to cover.
We get up at hellacious hours in order to watch every F1 practice, qualifying session and race live.
For his birthday I had black-with-gold-trim T-shirts made for us both.
Leave me alone
I know what I am doing
Hoping no further explanation required.

Very snazzy looking plane! Out of curiosity, has Jake checked the weight of the plane? Also, was it a challenge for him to install the control hookup for the V tail? A friend of mine had to do a few double back flips to install the controls on his Stinger without the elevators wanting to spring back to neutral when deflected.
-
Looks good! How does the V-tail handle in the wind?
-
Cool plane, nice look with the vintage f1 color scheme, need more of this
-
We haven't flown the plane yet. And, yes the V-tail hookup was
difficult to get smooth. The kit came with small ball links for this.
But, once it was all connected it was very stiff and had very
little deflection. We tried both cloth and conventional hinges and
it was the same both ways. So, we figured it must be the ball links.
We changed these out for Sullivan clevises and it came to life.
Turns out the ball links were binding. It now has plenty of deflection
and a little bit of slop at neutral, which should help in level flight.

Too bad VSC-25's dates aren't compatible with Jake's spring break. We'd have loved to see him flying this one here.

Yeah I second that. We'll miss you guys.

VERY COOL Jake!
Getting v-tail linkages smooth takes a bit of finesse and the right hardware. For my Stinger I adpated the strip aileron horns I used to use on my V-tail designs way back when. Ball links are just too clunky.
-
Looks like Jake has a winner there.

Killer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rock on Jake

Dennis,
Have you by chance put your Stinger on the scale? The one my friend built with a Brodak .40 came in at 44 oz. Bob Zambelli build a cool looking Stinger some years back with hand-painted bumblebee stripes. He said it needed a good deal of hollowing out due to the thinnish wing. I believe the fuze sides are 1/4", large wide top and bottom blocks, and the stab is solid 1/2", IIRC.

My Stinger was electric, weighed 43oz RTF, and is now in a landfill, the victim of Stupid Pilot Disease... HB~> :-[

Jake is a very cool dude.
I am also an F1 geek and behave very much like you Dan, but I think you are on Pacific time which is really early!
I've been following the Moto GP for a few years as well
Should be an interesting year.

Way to go Jake! Nice ride!
Jake's HLG's are legendary at the CL Nat's Moon HLG chuck event, and this proves he can do cool schemes with more than just magic markers.
I guess you got tired of just beating pops in HLG, time to start kicking pop's butt in the circle too. (sorry Steve, you know it's coming sooner or later)

hmm I know you said no further explenation,,
but ...
reference a radio transmission from Kimi Raikkonen to team principle
yeah that was priceless

Very nice, hope to see it flying soon.

Elevators springing to neutral on loss of tension would have been fine; problem was they sprung to full DOWN with loss of tension, like during the glide at the end of every flight. I ended up opening the fuselage (hey, no appearance points in OTS) and re-doing with two pushrods, one to each elevator half. This mostly cured the problem, caused by the need for the solid Y-shaped original pushrod to spring back to original shape after being pushed either direction (which is sort of the job of a pushrod, no?)
My Stinger flew well but quite fast and I sent it to a new home.
Kimster, can you post pictures for comparison?
Who is the cut-out pilot in the red one in this article?
-
Ummm, it says in the very first post that the pilot is Eduard Khil,
noted Russian singer.

Yeah Mark. Thanks. That went right over my head. Kimis post race interviews were gems too.

BZZZ! Wrong answer, Mr. Mike, who looks like Rod Stewart. My understanding is that this would cause premature impact with the Netzeband wall. Maybe one of our resident Experts can verify or refute.
.....Kimster, can you post pictures for comparison?......
I don't have a camera at the moment. I could swear I've seen pix of your Stinger on one of the forums, including a close-up of your pilot figure, the Hindu god Ganesha with many arms, one arm sticking out a hole in the left side of the canopy, another out the right, as if signaling both left and right turns simultooneously or flipping dual birds to passing pilots, either of which may have religious significance in India. I recall Brett commenting on the Ganesha figure. Maybe Heman has pix.
