WKSI Contest Results via Allen
« on: August 26, 2011, 08:00:56 PM »
Allen B. has very limited access to the internet and is having issues with his email. He sent me an email with the contest results for WKSI contest.

I am waiting on pictures as well. Stay tuned.

Here is the document Allen sent. It was a great contest. If you have never been you should put this one on the list next year. Great facility, food and fellowship. It was great to put some faces with some names.
==========================================================================

The Western Kentucky/Southern Illinois Stunt Champs were flown under much nicer temperature conditions with 91 degrees being the average; instead of the 107 heat index we have had in the past three years.  Twenty-three pilots entered and flew eight events over our two day contest time schedule.  August 18 and 19 will host the 2012 version of the WKSI.   Put it on your calendar for next year as this is the third week-end of the month.
SATURDAY, August 20, flown from 9:30am until 4:30pm

I have been saying this ever since Allen and Charlie started the WKSI that I would be there.   Guess I will just have to drive down for a visit.  I mean it is only an 8 hour drive with the family.   I could probably make it in less than 7.   But, don't hold your breath until you see me there. H^^

      STORY TIME!!!!

I've been trying to get down to Paducah to fly down at their new site ever since Allen moved the contest from Buder Park in St Louis.  Been reading allot about the development of the site on both forums and in SN, and really wanted to come check it out.  Unfortunately, due to a few....business trips....I have been unable to do so until this year.  I was able to fudge my post-deployment leave dates so that I could attend this years contest.  Sadly, I lost my Vector to a control failure up at Oshkosh a month before, so I had to do what I have done so many times before, and ask my dad to borrow an airplane or two to get through the contest.  LL~

The weekend was a blast before we even pulled out of the driveway.  It was the first time in nearly 8 years that Dad and I loaded up the van the night before, woke up at o-dark-30, filled up water coolers, and headed down the road munching on popcorn, like we did so many times throughout my childhood.  That in itself was worth the price of admission.   It was also an opportunity to visit with people, allot of whom I had not seen since my last CL contest (2009 Nats OTS and Classic) and a few folks that I had not seen since I was a civilian! (Jerry Norin, who I flew against while coming up in the ranks and a great guy all around,  didn't even recognize me! )  That was pretty much my goal for that weekend, flying being an afterthough, and one of the few contests that I didn't concern myself with weather.  A few isolated showers only meant more time for war stories!!

There were also a few first at this particular contest.  This was the first time that Dad and I would fly head-to-head in Expert.  No more worrying about who is up on the other circle--although we significantly made up for this fact by both of us flying OTS, Profile, and Nostalgia 30.  I think we managed to sit down twice in the whole day!  As it turned out, in Old Time, this would be the first time that I, flying my own airplane, beat dad, flying his own airplane, without anyone having any mechanical problems or having anything going wrong.  Ive been trying to do that for a long, long time and I finally made it!   Had a ton of fun watching dad get ribbed by a few folks for getting beat by "the kid" and I'm sure he had fun with it too.  Later that night,  we headed back to the field to get some practice in.  Dad persuaded me to fly his ST51 powered Charmer instead of his profile Shark.  I relented and put a few flights on it and it really felt good.  Next day, long story short, I put my first ever 550 point score on the board, blowing by dad on the scoreboard in the process.  Since I hadn't flown with any regularity since 2009, I just came to hang out and reconnect with folks, and that "don't care" attitude towards the flying part helped me relax and concentrate a ton.  Maybe ill take another 4 years off from competition stunt and then take it to the Nat's!!

The site?  Awesome in my opinion.  Grass has always been a favorite flying surface of mine: cooler and more forgiving of accidents.  The practice circles had some rough spots, but smart piloting and touching down in the right place alleviates that problem.  The circles that all the official flights were flown on were great.   Anyone with "blacktop landing gear" had no problem.  Some turbulence coming off of the trees as the wind picks up, but not bad at all. Permanent awnings made for plenty of shade (for those who found time to sit down!!) And on-site grilling cured the toughest cases of the munchies. Allen got the show started 30 minutes early on Sunday, and everyone was on the road by 12:30 or so.  I was especially grateful for that since I had a 13-hour drive from St Louis to Colorado Springs the next day, and that gave me time to hang out with my folks a bit more.

All in all, it was an incredible weekend...one for the books!  Big kudos and congratulations to Allen Brickhaus, Charlie Reeves, and the rest of the Paducah Aeromodelers for building such a nice site and putting on such a nice contest.

Unfortunately, I'm moving in the wrong direction to be coming back.  I'm headed back to Ft Huachuca, AZ in November to train to fly the MQ-1C Grey Eagle, and stand a chance to stay there after school.  I had a great time flying with the Cholla Choppers back when I was at Huachuca in 2005, and am excited about catching up with those great folks again.

I guess that was just a really long way of saying that, if you are within range of this contest, it is well worth the trip!!

Cheers,
Sean

All Stunt Pilots:  The results listed above like any competition  only give  the reader  who was NOT THERE a restricted view of the competition  level that was flown this weekend.  Reason?....The beautiful & unique Hi-Points award that was the serious contenders prize.  The  individual efforts put in for its winning were realized by at least 6 contenders in the the race for its taking. In the end Dan McEntee took the gold home but not an easy road there! Flying four events and helping son Sean  BEAT him in OLD TIME  kept the McEntee team on the go for two days.  That's after Dan...the previous week..remade the nose of his SCORE because of a crash!! The effort(s) the McEntee Team put in are explained well by Sean in his post above.  It was a terrific competition on a very well groomed grass site (are you listening AMA?)  that was enjoyed by many top pilots.  Put this date in your book for next year.                                                        Bill Allen

Sean, it is great you are able to fly with your dad and have fun.   Your post made me remember when I watched little Todd Lee beat his dad the first time in stunt.   There have been so many Father/Child teams I have watched compete in different events flying against each other and with each other such as the racing events.  Anyway young man keep your head down and safe as I hope to see you again. Sounds like a great time. Nice tight grouping in Expert, there.
