Wish Jack a Happy Brithday for us.  He was part of our JYW'S team this year.  The Memphis Mafia. He has our team uniform.

I remember the time both you and him were on our team and you stuck him with a knife on accident. That sparked his memory of when the two of you were kids and you cut him accidently with a knife.
During our JYW'S I told him i was not a doctor but i was staying at the holiday day express and administered first aid on the cut you gave him.  LL~

As a kid growing up reading his construction articles of "The Beamer of the Month", I knew Mr Sheeks was someone that I wanted to meet someday. There are many "Legands" of the hobby and I think Jack fits that bill, and I have tried to meet as many as I could once I started flying stunt sorta seriously and travelng the contest circuit. I finally got to meet him at a SIG contest, and then had the extreme pleasure of sitting at the same banquet table with Jack, Wild Bill Netziband, Gary Hajek, Allen Brickhaus, Charlie Reeves and my son Sean. Might have been other notables there but I've slept a few times since then. What an evening that was and I'll never forget it. I just told Sean to sit there with his eyes and ears open, take it all in and cherish the memory. He was 10 or 12 years old then and I'm not sure what he remembers, but I remember laughing my butt off all night listening to the stories. No way I could remember them all! He may have never won the NATS, or made a spot at the Team Trials, but he's a big part of what is Control Line Stunt History! I just may have to try and show up for a piece of cake and some ice cream!
   Happy Birthday and Many More,

I met Jack Sheeks around 1959 when I was 12 years old.  He was working as a Indianapolis Police Officer and had stopped by Elslager's Hobby Shop on the south side of Indy. I thought he looked like a giant. From a 12 year old's point of view he looked 8 feet tall. He was a little gruff but I later came to realized it was just his sense of humor. Jack was a hugh influence in my life and the reason I wanted also to become a cop.  Jack and I have been through a lot over the years, so many local contest and Nationals I can't Begin to remember them all.  In his younger days there was no one that could draw, build and paint a stunt ship faster then Jack Sheeks.  He has proven be one of the most predominant figures of all time in the world of Control-Line Stunt. (I almost forgot he is also a great guy) Happy Birthday Jack!

As noted, Jack is not only one of the all-time great designers and builders, but also a very fine gentleman.  Although unable to attend his birthday party, I will definitely send him a congratulatory email on the 30th.

Jack is one of my heroes too... back in 1968 I started playing with these toy airplanes and around that time I saw my first issue of Flying Models.. Feb 1969... The Scottsman was in it.. I finally built one in the early 1980s... anyway I was flying RC mostly until 1990 when all my RC gear went obsolete and I stopped flying... in 1998 I returned to CL.. stated flying a little here and there... then I made the trip to the Vintage Stunt Champs in 2001... I finally met Jack and Shirley... imagine sitting next to your hero at a stunt contest... after my second flight which almost ended in a crash I returned to my chair... and he leaned over and said... "I wish you could move to Indianapolis"... later I wrote a small article on Jack (my hero) and it was read by Keith Trostle... and he wrote and encouraged me to nominate Jack to the AMA Hall of Fame, I did and in 2002 Jack was inducted, rightfully, into the Hall of Fame... can you imagine going from being a starry eyed kid to sitting next to the guy you read about month to month.... in the eyes of the world it is insignificant but to me it has been monumental... life is funny... soooooo...

Happy Birthday Jack.. you are still my hero. BTW... the old Scottsman I built 30 yrs ago may yet fly again it's bones are still intact..

I think Jack is one of everyone's favorite modelers.  I've had the great privilege of judging scale with him and trying hard to concentrate without losing my cool by laughing my head off.  He's just a hilarious guy.  Let's not forget Jack's success as a scale modeler besides his stunt building.  I forget how many times he's been on the world team for scale.
It was my honor to interview him for Stunt News while I was still writing the Personalities column and had a hard time taking notes while chuckling at his stories!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY this month, old friend, hang tough and stick around for a long time!  We love you.

I first met Jack briefly at Windy's house  many moons ago. Over the years I have appreciated him more and more. His humor and love of Shirley are most evident.
But the other side of Jack is amazing. The more you look at his designs you come realize his GENIOUS. He is an innovator to the Nth degree.  Convention was never his cup of tea. The "Sea Vixen" that I built is a prime example. The fuselage is all blended curves. I would never have thought to use the methods he used, and I learned a lot just from that build. Take a serious look at his designs and you appreciate Jack more and more.

Jack and I have both been interested in McDonnell's first airplane, the XP67. I worked at McDonnell and met many of the people were there from the beginning. Jack built a large profile version of the airplane to prove the concept. I now have that airplane I hope that I will be able to use it to help built a built up version of the airplane for scale.

it is an honor to call Jack a friend. May Shirley and Jack have many more years together.

Hey Jack I hope you have many more Happy Birthdays.  I remember when you and Charles Mackey helped me with a flight at VSC.  That is when I was asked if I knew how to count.  Also I can still remember the first time I met Jack at a Nationals.  Was talking with Big Art at the time.

I was born and raised in Indianapolis.  Around '65 or '66, my cousin and I started fooling with model airplanes again.  I bought a Sterling Mustang and he bought a Sterling Yak9.  I bought a McCoy 35 and he bought a McCoy 40.  Anyway we flew and crashed a lot, so trips to the hobby shop were in order.  One day, while shopping for stuff, I saw one of Jack's planes hanging in the hobby shop.  It was one of the Stuntliners.  I asked the store owner about it and she told me about Jack.  They also sold FM Magazine and one of Jack's articles was in it.  I left determined to meet this local hero.  I found his name in the phone book and called him up.  He was very nice and some time later, I was able to visit him.  He was very helpfl and we talked about his career in modeling.  He showed me pictures of many of his designs.

Jack and I became friends...er he tolerated me pestering him.  Jack was a police officer at the time and he also painted refrigerators part-time with Bernie Ash.  I know of at least one of his planes was painted with refrigerator paint.  He told me stories about Jim Vornholt and John Davis.  I hung on to every word.

I was fortunate to watch Jack fly a few times.  After he built a model, he would test it in clear dope, in case he had to cut into it to make changes.  If it was a turkey, he saved a paint job.  Two in particular that I saw on the maiden flight were the Scottsman and the Ryan SC.

I always liked the Stuntliner I first saw in the hobby shop.  After much negotiating, I was able to swap an old outboard motor for it.  Jack was a wheeler dealer.  My cousin bought a small swept wing called the Asheeks, designed by Jack and Bernie Ash.  He also bought a plane unnamed, but referred to as the profile that isn't.  It had a slab fuselage built up with blocks and it looked like a full bodied airplane.  It resembled the Ares and was covered with jap tissue and painted black.  To this day, my cousin still owns them.  I don't think they were flown more than a couple of times.  My cousin is a collector.

My new job in the fall of 1966 found me traveling all week.  By that time, due to Jack's influence, I was a dedicated modeler.  I used to build airplanes in the motel rooms, more than once causing other guests to check out due to the dope fumes.  I carried a plane in the trunk of my company car and sought out school yards wherever I happened to be working.  Come the end of the day, I would jury rig a stooge and fly.  I would make it a point to see Jack on weekends when I was home.

In 1968, I was transferred to Michigan and Jack and I remained in touch by phone, with an occasional visit when I came home for a vacation.  Jack gave me a homemade aluminum handle that he engraved his name into and an old flight box he had.  I still have both.  Jack's influence and inspiration led me to design my own plane that was eventually published.  I also went on to compete in the NATs, but that's another story.

Jack Sheeks is definitely the most influential person I have ever met and I could never repay his kindness and friendship.  He is a true  gentleman and a brilliant designer.

Thank you Jack.

Great memories of you and Jack, Dick. What ever happened to the Stuntliner model?  :)

There was a young guy in our club in Saginaw who really wanted that plane.  He couldn't fly that well and was happy flying in circles.  I can't remember what the circumstances were, but I sold it to him and he was a happy guy.  Sorry to say he was a recovering addict on methadone.  Unfortunately, he slipped back and was found dead in the men's room at a Pure Oil gas station.  He died from a hot shot.  I don't know what happened to the plane after that.

Long time ago.  It came with a Fox 40.  I think I watched Jack fly it once very well.  I flew it a few times, even entering a Detroit area contest with it, but I was always afraid of dorking it.  At that time, I was concentrating on profiles; Banshee, Magician, Coyote and so on.

Dick do you remember if this Stuntliner had a straight or swept back wing design? Can you recall how it was painted? Thanks, Mike  H^^

Wow.  That was a long time ago.  I understand Jack built several Stuntliners, all a bit different.  I don't think mine had a swept wing.  Paint was predominantly blue with red and white accents, at least I think so.  The engine sat upright and the cylinder was in the cockpit.  The windows of the cockpit were open for cooling.  It was a pretty airplane but I couldn't fly it like it deserved to be.  It was early in my stunt career.
