Why when I log in..........
« on: November 06, 2008, 08:12:11 AM »
Why is it that when I log in each time, I am given a multiple choice in how long I wish to remain logged in ( I chose forever), yet I still have to re-type my info each time I go back?

Is there an internal issue?

Just a question.

Hi, Doc

Don't know for sure but doubt it is a forum setting.  I suspect it is a security setting on your computer that needs to be tweaked.  You might want to look at how your computer is instructed to handle cookies for a start.  If your computer is set to not accept cookies, delete them when you leave a site or something similar, the Stunt Hanger forum has no way to recognize you when you return.

I have been currently logged on for over 10 days!!!  If I get better information, I will post it.

regards,

When ever i have the cookies setting too low or off completely any site i have to login will not remember me. I had the same problem here until i raised the cookies setting and i haven't had to sign in for over a year!

Hope this helps

I use Firefox, and first I set it to retain cookies, visited all the sites I
wanted cookies from, and closed it. Then I went back and changed the
cookies option to discard all cookies on exit of Firefox. And I cleaned
up any stray cookies and removed them.

Now I have the best of all worlds, I don't have to log onto most of my
favorite sites, and when I close Firefox, it forgets all the garbage and
tracking cookies it may have picked up.

On certain sites I still have to log in, e.g. the radio netcasts that are paid
for. And here on SH, I found that I was still able to post earlier while not
being logged in. And when I said to be "forever" logged in, it kept asking
me to log in again, and now it apparently does believe I am permanently
logged in, telling me :Total time logged in: 1 days, 15 hours and 10 minutes."
which seems about right to me.

Anyway, try doing what I did. I'm not sure how to do it in IE, however.

For Internet Explorer-click your tools/internet options/privacy tab, check your setting on the slider. It should be at medium to medium high. If it is on the highest setting, it will reject all cookies.By clicking the Advanced button, you can overide automatic cookie handling on your machine and accept all cookies. Your machine needs to accept 1st party cookies to perform the auto login/ stay logged in feature of Stunt Hangar.
Also, you may have your machine doing a daily cleanup routine thats deleting all cookies daily, as well as temporary internet files. You need to disable that feature or change its routine schedule.

I know that Larry's method a couple of posts back is a valid one,  I see where it would work well in some settings.  In may case I share a computer with other family members some of whom do on-line gaming, myspace, and many other places that tend to pick up baggage.  A few months ago I instituted the policy of clearing the internet history almost daily -- sometimes several times per day.  We use the delete all tab in the delete history menu of the IE internet options.  Sure I end up frequently re-logging into some generally safe sites but our machine has worked so much better in general that I consider it worth the trouble.

When I first go to the main forum page I am not logged in.

If I just click the "Open forum" tag, it automatically logs me back in.

Different, but working.

After reading the responses I have come to this. There is nothing wrong with the forum, its a end user problem. Cookie settings or security setting on your computer.

Been down this road a few times!

For Windows (at least at the highest level) I think accepting cookies is controlled entirely by the security settings - so it's really just one problem. Steve Yampolsky and I had a heck of a time figuring out why a few people were having problems logging into the PAMPA website. Someone would try to log in, apparently fail, but we would see that they had successfully logged in at the time they tried. Eventually, we figured out that they would actually succeed in logging in, but not store the cookie indicating that, and that would bounce them back to the login page. For all they could tell, it failed. In reality, it worked but their computer immediately "forgot".

To get it to work in IE, you have to slide the slider on the security panel to "maximum" to one notch less (which is still mostly safe - it only accepts cookies from sites you actually select). For other browsers, you have to check the "accept cookies only from sites you navigate to" (pretty safe) or "accept all cookies" (risky) option.
