Its Boring being Retired
« on: April 10, 2010, 12:57:36 AM »
Hi guys,

I hate being retired, nothing to do, had to go out to the flying field and put five flights in. After doing that had to take the wife out on a lunch date, (Taco Bell, She has a Taco and I had a new 5 layer burrito and two senior drinks, it costed me a $1.94). No other place to go so came home, cleaned up the garage. Nothing else to do so I sanded on my Brodak Zero that was given to me bye this great forum. Still nice and sunny outside so I cleaned up the plane with good old Windex and placed a coat of white on her. I have to wait a few days until I start the different trim painting, cure time. I guess I'll just have to sit around in my little play shack, turn the TV on and look at the forum on my computer. God knows I love retirement, I'm going to try and live as long as I can, worked my butt off to get here and loving it, Gary (PS, wished ya all could have been there!!!!!!)

OK guys stop rubbing it in.
Some of us still have to get up every day and make small ones out of big ones. And we are lucky if we get 15 mins a day to sand on a plane.
With the way things are today, I may not ever get to retire.

And is sure is harder now a days to keep up with the Jones. HB~> mw~ D>K

I'm right there with you Paul- working on the road and trying to stay ahead of the bills. Eating $5 Subway Footlong for lunch and saving 1/2 of it for dinner. That way I can stash a little bit of my daily food alowance to support my C/L habit.

But I realized that most days I am retired.  I am tired when I go to bed one day, and tired again the next day, so.....

I agree retirement is boring.  Was kind of a forced retirement as the company gave me a bonus to retire.  34 years working for the phone system.  First year I spent the summer working for my son cutting brush and weeds.  Had to wait til my 62 birthday for the social security.  Then I got to spend three weeks in Tuscon.  Watched the final day of combat.  Then the week of VSC and the final weekend was Cabin Fever.  Then I went back to work at Neighborhood Market for a year.  Now I work part time doing crossing duty for a security company.  By the way during that time remodeled house and built my shop.  I won't mention all the planes I built.   H^^

I toiled for quite a few years at the same aerospace company.  They decided to close the division where I was and offered a couple of retirement perks to we old farts.  I took advantage of it to get out of the rat race, took me about 2 nano-seconds to make that decision.  That was 15 years ago at age 54+.  Don't know how I ever had time to go to work, too much to do!

I retired in May of 2000 and never regrettted it; except for having to pay $$$ for insurance. I've been busier than ever before and wonder how I ever had time to work. I'd like to thank Paul and all the others still working and paying into the SS system . . .  I thank you each and every second Wednesday of the month!  HH%% HH%%

Yeah my next door neighbor that I have flown planes with since the 8 Th. grade, about 50 years now, is sort of envious of my free time I think. He will not get off the train until Aug. of 2011. I on the other hand retired from Lockheed Martin (F-16 F/A22) way back in 2004. My late wife was very ill with diabetic related problems. I got to spend the entire next year with her nearly 24/7. It was a life changing experience. After being widowed 2 1/2 years I remarried. Both of us are now retired and we love it. We are active in the Dallas Model Aircraft Association and attend several out of town contests. I can do yard work for as long as I like, I always keep some thing on the building table. Go flying often. Visit my local hobby shops. Do the grandpa thing. Stay up late as well as sleep late. We live on a lake in north Texas. So we can take the pontoon boat out if we like. And attend our local home church. What can I say? As long as our health holds out we are Super Blessed. It took 50 years of working to get here but the working was worth it all. Enjoy each and every day of your life; for life is way too short not to.

Hey Paul, I hear you.  I'm 48 working two jobs, one kid in college and the other with another year of high school to go.  My dad and my wife's mom who are both widowed are beginning to need extra attention.  No end in sight but I'm still hopeful that someday I'll have time, money, and a good place to fly.  Right now I my building and flying is occaisional, but I usually have a project going.  For a couple of years my only flying airplane was a 1/2a Golden Hawk -- then I broke the wing and haven't got it fixed or replaced.  Grounded for now until I get one of my projects flying.

I am also retired and I have to agree with all the the previous postings, BUT for you younger people,  don't wish your life away.  A guy once said that to me and he was right.  Retirement is great, but do you 40 year olds really want to be 65 tomorrow?  My wife and I are doing most of the things we always wanted to do now while we still can and I couldn't wish for anything better but we know that we aren't young anymore.  So, look forward to your retirement, but enjoy your younger years first.  Me, I'm building airplanes, learning to fly fish, taking up bow hunting with my son, and trying to learn how to fly those airplanes.  Enjoying the time I have left while I still can.

My retirement happened in 1997.  I had mixed emotions, because I loved my job at Lockheed in Sunnyvale, CA.  Brett Buck worked on the same program in the same building.  So, in leaving, I lost out on his advice (which I sought often).

Gentlemen,
What all you retirees need is a good form of CME, "constant mental exercise"
if you are not being challenged by something every day you will wither away
mentally and physically. Open some new horizons, irritate the crap out of your
grand kids something, anything is better than thinking about how boring life is.
Life is not boring, life is discovering something new everyday and acting on it.
Turn off the computer get your butt out of the chair and move it, think it, act on it !
Nuff said,

I have been semi-retired since 2006 and only work about 12 shifts a month...more often than not, 2300 to 0700 on Friday and Saturday nights with a few pickup shifts sprinkled here and there.  As a result, I have tons of free time during the week and can do just about anything I want.  It was many, many years of go-go-go owning my own business and doing law enforcement on the side.  It is good to relax.  My wife is younger and she continues her routine work schedule which is almost 7 days a week, through her own choice.  She really enjoys keeping busy in a field she loves.

Reading this thread has brought a couple of thoughts to mind.  As I have pointed out before, I left the hobby in 1976 due to a career change and relocation.  My last competition was in 1975.  Several months ago, I decided to become a modeler once again and I joined this board and started reading and purchasing supplies for my renewed interest in CLPA.

Many of the guys I used to fly against or had the pleasure of meeting years ago are still active.  It made me realize that people around my age back then are still around my age now.  It seems that a certain generation of CLPA enthusiasts moved forward in a group.  Certainly there are younger people who have followed and will continue the process.  Matt Colan is a good example of a young man with fresh enthusiasm and determination. Cudos to him and his generation!

This is probably not a phenomenon and is likely the same way in other hobby interest groups.  There are those who hang tough throughout the years and stay involved with their chosen pastime.  Still, I think it speaks volumes how well this particular activity holds its participants in active or passive limbo.  It's a good group to identify with.

OK, time for a nap... Z@@ZZZ

SO!!!! the group decided to get together again and we flew our toys, shot the breeze, than I went home picked up the wife and took her out to Taco Bell for a hot date, spend a bunch of money for this hot date, ($1.94, broke the bank) Had a great time flying my Stiletto with a Double Star 61 RE Lite. Just love the heck out of that there Stiletto. When I'm flying it makes me feel like Mr. Les himself but ya sure as heck don't want to see a picture of me aflying it, the truth might come out. As the retirement goes on, just had to report in about the great play day us old fa()ts had, Gary

Retirement is when you work twice as hard as you did before, but you don't get that weekly check.........and the one you get monthly isn't half what your weekly check was! Hi, I know about that fellow also. Some people ask me what I did for a living, I usually tell them that I did it so bad that they decided to pay me to stay home and not to try and do what ever it was that I did. My wife told me I need another employment, I told heck don't have time, been working for her since I retired. I just figured it out, Darn!!!!! she's retired, NOT ME, Gary

You want something BORING? I retired at the ripe old age of 60 due to a disability. Loys of building time when I feel good. But when I fly, I kind of forget my problems. That why I love flying n~

First let me say that I doubt anyone in this hobby really ever gets bored. There are more kits to build, more scratch built planes to dream up, and more flying time than ever.........even when we were kids ourselves. I have been back in this hobby/sport for some 11 years now. I doubt I am any better pilot after all this time. But I go fly the full pattern with every plane I have, judge some contests, fly Intermediate some, and just have a ball with it all. I have more engines, more planes, and more kits and scratch built planes in my head. I love it. In fact I gave away a couple of planes to a man who teaches youngsters to fly. He can always use extra planes. Why keep planes hanging around for 10 years that just get hanger rash. Put them to good use and either fly them or donate them to your club. Which me brings me to another subject; What is going to happen to your stuff when you are gone? It seems that here in Dallas we always have someone who passed on and after the family gets a keep sake the rest is just up for grabs. Think about it. Mean while back at the ranch there is modeling to get done.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for your input, great that you pass on your toys for others to play with. I thought about what is going to happen to my toys when I go to the other side. Maybe could take some of them with me, no one else would want them anyway!!!!! I think we should let our families or wife or friend know what we would like to happen to our toys!!!!! You're correct flying is one of the best parts, when I'm in the circle, flying my Stiletto, I'm Mr. Les himself, Ha Ha. Its just a lot of fun playing, come on I worked my self to death to get here so let me enjoy it!!!! I fly with a great bunch of guys, no girls, have to just watch the girls walk bye!!!! Be careful we're a church group!!! (The girls still look pretty good)!!!!!! Where we fly its open, so we get a lot of people to come and watch. I think most people believes it easy to fly our toys, until they try. Thanks for everyones input, being retired is great, just not fun getting younger, Gary
