It has become decision time for the nats!
« on: July 01, 2008, 02:04:33 PM »
After having great engine runs for several flights and finally getting the trim fairly well worked out my runs have gone sour and I'll be darned if I can work them out!  I've tried "it all" but to no avail.  Soooo.....Today's session decided me on putting the new Ephesian aside until after the nats and going witjh old faithful, the # 1 Crossfire with my old trusty PA65 in it.  After all, I haven't been practicing, I've been troubleshooting!  It's time to practice.
Drat, drat, and double drat!

Will:
Over on that OTHER forum Brett Buck was alerting folks to what he thinks is a bad batch of fuel.  Be careful out there..!

Thanks Dennis, that's the only avenue I have not yet approached.  I'll check it out when I fly old faithful.  If it doesn't run right I'll know for sure it's fuel!  That thing runs like clockwork.
Thanks again,
Will

If it IS fuel then Old Faithful might be at risk - that's what I am afraid of.

* Did your problems with Ephesian (love that name) start around the time you opened new fuel?  If not then I'm worrying over nothing..

actually, I don't think they did.  I've tracked it back to the point where i broke a prop on an aborted take-off when a wheel caught and the Bolley shredded in the grass.  I never saw one shred like that before, especially in grass!
The only other prop big enough for the 75 was a 14.5 three blade and I thought, "what the heck, let's see if the 75 turns this okay".
It seemed to, but about then was when the problems started and it took me a while to realize that I might be loading the big fellow down way too much.  By then I had changed the tank, filter, plug, (the plug was giving a bit of a drop when the glo-driver was removed at the end there) and yoga.  Somewhere in the middle of all that was when the new gallon had to come forth, but I'm pretty sure I had already had the problems before opening this current one.
My new Bolleys have arrived from my buddy Roger Wildman and I'm back on track to sort things out with "normal" numbers.
I put the power train in my backup Crosswind and will do the rest of my troubleshooting with it, but after the nats.
Thanks, Dennis, for your help and concern, I'll keep you posted as to progress, and hope to see you at the nats!!!
Blessings,
Will

Dennis,
I took old faithful out today, the 4th, fueled out of the same batch, cranked, flew, and then repeated the same thing over for another flight.  All went wonderfully!  5.9 second laps, plenty of tension, steady rpm's for the full flight, and really, really bad flying.  Man, am I rusty!!  Probably won't make the top twenty even with the fewer numbers!  But I'll have FUN!

Will,

You could always lift the whole setup for the 65 out and put it in the new plane. I'm sure the 65 has the punch and at least you would know that you were working with a solid setup.

I'm surely considering that, Randy, but need to wait 'til after the nats, especially after the way I flew today. Yuk.

Robert, I figure I have less than a dozen actual full patterns in, so betcha I get last ahead of you.  (How's THAT for an oxymoron?)

Is there such a thing as "More Last"?

Sorry, that spots taken.  My electric plane is now "most worse".  All those little parts flew in formation so well, until last saturday, when they decided they all individually in the lead, and went different directions. Now they fly, "most worse", well actually, they don't even fly!  Way most worse.
