It's a Karma thing
« on: April 13, 2016, 08:01:11 PM »
Today was a good and interesting day at the flying field.  First of all a very old friend and flying partner came out for the first time to volunteer in coaching my flying.  Some of the older hands here will remember Steve Johnston from the 1970's contest circuit including the Nats and two team trials.  He laid down the handle last about 38 years ago and did well for himself in the real estate business.  Today I shoved him out to the handle of my old Only Vegas for the first time since then and did just fine.  It will be great to have him as an asset to my training.  I've attached a photo of him today at Trible International.
While I waited for Steve and readied to fly a couple Shawnee Policemen drove up.  They had seen the circle for two years but never knew what it was for until today.  They got out of the car and asked many questions .  One showing interest in the plane and eager to see it fly,  the younger one-"what's that pink stuff" (my fuel) and "does that fly on lines?"  I heard the other reassuring him as I slipped my hand into the safety thong.  Anyway it all went very well and I think friends were made.  Now here's the fun part.  I've had a lot of problems with jerks plowing up the flying circle with four-wheelers and motor bikes.  I'm always patching ruts.  Two weeks ago I decided to try something new.  I went down the road a few hundred yards and mowed out a new area much bigger than the circle and right next to the road so it couldn't be missed.  I hoped this 'decoy' field would be their target and they would leave the field alone.  Well when I got to the circle I was glad to see there was no more damage to the circle...  I mentioned it to the cops.  They told me the jerks rolled their truck over down on the decoy field,  it caught fire and burnt into scrap metal..:))))))!...:))))!!

Haha, I'm so happy to hear that. I remember reading of your rut repairs some time ago. So you made some new Cop friends and destroyed the rutmakers, Bravo! H^^

Way to go Dave.  I haven't seen Steve since his last flight at the old KCMo River Front Park.    Right now family has kept me tied up.  Putting base coats on the planes.   H^^

That is so cool.. Wished the idiots that think my property is a dirt track would crash and burn like that. They don't make it to the circles but sometimes think the ditch out by the road is a cool obstacle course.

I realized you can see some of the field damage in the photo that has been patched.  I carry buckets of dirt over from a nearby soybean field.  It torks me also since I put down about $200 worth of grass seed last fall.  I'm hopeful but doubt these fools were the only ones.  We'll see.  Think I'll keep the decoy mowed once in a while.  Bob I'd sure hate to see your circles plowed up.  At least you have cameras on them.

We get helicopters practicing sling-loading and putting ruts in the ground right where we paint our circles. And some of them evidently have APU exhaust blowing down and burning the grass in big patches. I just let them play all they want to though.

Rusty I wouldn't be arguing with those boys.  But boy those ruts can pull a landing gear out of your airplane in a blink of an eye.  I lost a good one that way awhile back.  Reminds  me of once at a Navy Nats somebody landed and a wheel dropped into an aircraft tie down on the ramp.  Not sure what the landing score was but they didn't get to fly it again.  That's what these ruts make me worry about not to mention turning an ankle should you haplessly step into one.

Dave,

Didn't Steve have a design published in MA back in the day?
