Title: Is this going to fly???
Post by: MarcusCordeiro on August 24, 2013, 08:53:48 PM
We're having our "junkyard war" kind of thing at the club and as I was tired of doing the same thing, I decided to try a gyrocopter.
I got a gallon of fuel in a bet... Used some plans I had as a base and that's what we got ...
Flying is tomorrow.
Am I gonna get the fuel?? Enya 25 9X5 Prop

It'd be (really) good to have some tipweight to counter all that hardware inboard.  H^^ Steve

We thought about that, but the plans I have don't mention any... That worries me  ~^

Well, if it flies, I get a gallon of fuel, if it doesn't, there's next year...  LL~ LL~ LL~
Most designs I checked have little wings, but I thought that was cheating... Wanna make it fly only using the rotor.
So, firgers crossed everybody...

I expect it will fly. You may find you need the throttle as shown in the video. I think there is a good chance that too much power will cause it to climb excessively. Which of course turns into a dive 3 seconds later.

One thing for sure - have someone videotape the attempts!

You might want to check with Jim Lee (jlee9 at cox dot net) who has a lot of experience with flying C/L autogyros.

Yeah, Jim Lee uses his for balloon bust, of all things! I just can't remember if he uses a throttle or not. It's been a while. Howard Olsen had one with a throttle at Oshkosh this year, and it flew similarly to the one in the video. A throttle may be the optimum way to fly one, but if you are marginal on power, that may help, just have balance correct, proper down thrust, and good elevator authority. Kind of sorta like a Bislob, and be ready to back pedal. Didn't some one recently post a video of one made from a ceiling fan???? I think it actually got off the ground, but then something broke. I think the way these things are set up, is you need proper angle on the rotor fore and aft wise, and slightly to the outside of the circle, to help with line tension.
And by all means, do post a video! These things are kind of interesting.
   Type at you later,
   Dan McEntee

Thanks people for rooting for me..
There will be a video, whatever happens...

The cg is ok. It's made of fruit box wood, the only wood we can use,so it's kind of heavy, landing will be a blast, assuming it will fly LL~ LL~

Whether it flies or not:   010!

Jim Lee's gyro doesn't use a throttle.  It flies quite stable or it wouldn't be much for balloon bust.  It's quite old now and been repaired a bunch.  Weight might be helping but he sure wins a lot with it

Dave

He might fly it at the contest today.  If so I'll get a photo on.

Marcus,

You're loosing it.  LL~

As you know, for that to fly, the three blades have to rotate at a reasonable speed. Balance could be a facter. Is it balanced and does it spin freely?

You could, as a last resort, place a board for a wing, where the rotor is attached, no airfoil needed, and it will fly.

Might do the pattern.  ;D

You should get some high appearance points.

Good luck with it.

Many autogyroes were built here in Japan because a manufacture had sold 2 kits, Skygyro and Metalgyro, in the 1970s.
This photo is my friend's Skygyro that is built from the kit plan (and modified). The original was not skids but familiar 2 main gear wheels. This model is powered by OS FP25.
Skygyro flies stably and can do loop.
Your model has less rotor incidence than Skygyro and no rotor tilt.

Good flying, Aki

Today is a day I will never forget.
Today is yhe day my friend and partner Joaquim "Kim" and I made the first succesfull flight of a gyrocopter in the traditional "Prova do Caixote" ( Wood Box War), similar to your Junkyard War.
I couldn't be happier and that's a moment I'll treasure forever...
And after everybody there came to congratulate me, my finishing place didn't matter anymore.
All right, it wasn't a smooth flight and what Brett said almost happened, but the model and I managed to stay airborne, pity the landing, which was vertical... LL~ LL~
Thanks to all your support guys.
and thanks to my buddy Kim, withou whom I'd never have achieved this.

Well, yeppee ka yay!!!!!

Video soon #^

I'd like to see the successful flight from the start -- it looked to me like your launcher was spinning the rotor the wrong way at launch.

Very cool aircraft.  Autogyros have always fascinated me, but I've never gotten around to making one.

Thanks guys!!
I'm sure more vídeos will show... when i get them, I'll post here...
We moved the lead out guide na inch ahead and it rolled smoothly half circle and took off...
This is how I tested the rotor...

As usual Jim Lee got first in balloon burst in Topeka today.   He goofed and knocked the first balloon off the stick.   I got two sticks and called it quits.
