Is it safe to go outside :-)
« on: March 18, 2020, 12:24:06 PM »
We now have a mandate to limit group size to 25 and have social distancing.  It is recommended to stay at home if you are at high risk - most of the control line community, by age.  The bright spot is that it is safe and even suggested to go outside with proper social distancing.  Taking the dog out is a good thing, and even recommended.

Yesterday I took that to heart and took the dog out for exercise.  60° in the shade with minimal wind, and there was full sun.  It was a great day to be out.  I kept my social distancing at 70', well maybe 85' as it was roped off.  My old dog and I enjoyed being out.  Hope that you can take your dog, old or new, out as well.

Find some enjoyment in your day.

I went flying yesterday. Today I went to Tractor Supply, and drove 35 miles to the Tri Parish Co-Op for the fertilizer T.S. didn't have. I also went shopping for some eggs. Do I care about the media induced hysteria? Nope. I'm doing everything I want, except the restaurant thing. They're closed.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

I have a fairly robust immune system. I wash my hands several times and day and don't shake hands. I'm good.

It seems as long as you are not in a locations hot spot with a large number of cases it should be fine, just keep several feet distance between you when possible (like when not holding the ship for starting).

Important item is to wash hands with soap and warm water. This is the main way to kill the virus as the soap breaks down the fatty shell of the virus and breaks apart the structure and kills it.

We probably fall into one of two categories.  One group is at high risk if they get the disease and the other is at high risk to share or spread the disease.  You may be fine and healthy, but what of the risk group of those that you go home to.

Of course my real meaning of the thread is to get out and do the activity that we enjoy, flying our old or new dogs.  The title may not be the greatest in keeping with that meaning, so I added the smiley.

Fred,
My dog has been getting a lot of exercise lately and appears to really like his longer leash. In spite of this, he has not lost any weight?

The park were I fly in Yuma is very large with four lighted baseball diamonds and a large grass area set aside for more traditional canines.  I fly off of the large paved parking lot. It came as a surprise to me that this normally busy park has been virtually empty during my last few visits.

The fact that my dog keeps coming home with me and not “shelter in place” as a number chose to do in the past is a bonus.

With all that’s happening in the world, a few good laps and a little vitamin D does wonders.

Well guys spent last weekend in Texas(sorry I was tied up to visit any body)with in laws.  Only had Teddy the male of the house with us.  Did not eat out or go bar hopping nor the theaters.   Trip home was slow with all the road construction.   New speed limits helped a lot though.  If weather would co-operate I would be flying. As soon as the rain stops I will have my old Harley out for a spin up the back roads. I ride just a little faster than the virus can fly and not any faster than my guardian angel. I have the tee shirt. Not fun being kept out of doing the things we normally do. I always take my wife on a dinner date every Tuesday. Not this week.

I saw today, of all things, that the police are using drones in the lock down areas to spy on those who do not comply with the lock down. Drones are not our friends in more ways than one.

In England as of last night, we have a species of lockdown (one of the latest buzzwords, along with epicentre) that permits leaving the house/garden for one exercise session a day.  The wife and I are accustomed to a long morning walk in our mile-square local area of parkland: now we're making it really early, so we've seen a few beautiful dawns.  The man I envy is my old flying/motorcycling buddy whose house is under the eaves of a fair-sized wood (which he owns), so he can do all the walking he likes.  Pity he's got a bad knee, but he also gets plenty of exercise sawing logs for his huge old wood-burning stove.  For myself, I've been looking up plans in old copies of AeroModeller for rubber-powered parlour-flying models.  Ho hum - I'm trying hard to look on the bright side.

Fred,

We still have snow on the ground so I'll enjoy the flying vicariously through your post. I'm hopeful that it warms here soon so that I too can enjoy that 70' social distancing!

Trust you are keeping well.

Cheers,

Ken

Ken,
Great to hear from you and that you are well.  Oregon has changed the rules so that flying or getting to a site to fly could be questionable legally.  Parks are closed. It is probably still ok in some places, but the local police could interpret it differently for public sites, and that could be a problem.

Not to worry, the rain and wind has taken care of that for days it looks like.  I'm in vicarious mode for a while as well.

Why should we do any different now than when we had the other virises killing people?  Check the stats some time. D>K

While the Portland site would be closed, the Salem site isn't a park property, so it should be ok to fly there, right?  y1 Steve

That's been my story and I'm sticking to it!  Weather isn't cooperating however, maybe next week from what I see. The potential problem is that a local police officer could think that it is park property.

I'll do that in vicarious mode as well.  I have been retired long enough to give up my license.  Of course that requirement could be waved.  So far, I haven't been asked to work officially, just continue to advise friends.  Thanks for the thoughts.

Last season, the Salem field had a crack fill and seal done.  Not exactly unexpected, there was some settling of the cracks.  Last week this photo was taken with some touch up fill and seal being done.  We were told that the cracks were bottomless.  When I was a kid, I would have been told that the cracks went all the way to China.  Perhaps fields would be safer from Coronavirus, it would be safer to go outside, if we could convince Park departments, cities and states to fill and seal the cracks in our fields and keep the virus from coming up.  No, not a political comment, just light hearted attempt at humor.

Here in the people's republic of Washington things have gotten completely insane. Our idiot-in-chief announced a virtual complete lockdown of all "nonessential" businesss. But the list of things allowed to stay open as "essential" includes liquor stores and.......pot shops.
Then he announced yesterday that all BLM managed public lands are closed.  If that wasn't enough, today he announced that all fishing is restricted too.

All in the name of preventing the spread of Kung Flu.

Yes indeed, you can't wander the wild wide open places, or go to a river or lake in your boat to fish, but you can stand in line at the liquor store or the pot shop with other people, that's just fine.

I knew this guy was stupid already, but I didn't think he was THIS stupid.

This is aimed at one thing, getting you to call your republican representatives and tell them to go along with the moronic Pelosi bill.

As a part time sport fisherman, I'm pretty miffed at Gov. Inslee for his stupidity. No fishing is allowed, but boating is apparently ok. They can close some of the boat launches, but there are some lakes with lots of private boat launches, plus there are lots of boats docked on the lakes and some types that don't require any launch facility at all. The folks with boats tied up to their docks can go boating...sailing, skiing, wake boarding, yachting, paddle boarding, sail boarding,  canoeing, whatever. But we can't go fishing?

I know of at least 4 other States that are encouraging fishing, to the point that one has waived fishing licenses for the duration of the CV-19 crisis. I don't know what Inslee is smoking, but I think it's marijuana laced with something more powerful. Here I was going to suggest that my buddy buy a bigger boat, so he'll be farther away from me. Yes, he used to fly CL and FF, but he won't sell me his Dad's huge piles of uber-light balsa sheets.  LL~ Steve

I got out for some exercise today, again at Salem Airport.  I found an empty parking lot on the airport shuttle end, and the doors closed and locked.  The grass and sidewalks were decorated by the geese, usually kept away by traffic.  The circle was also claimed by geese, and they weren't inclined to give up ownership.  I had to walk within 20' and keep clapping my hands to get them to move.  That was repeated times 3 before they flew over to the pond.  They weren't inclined to keep the social distance of the circle radius.

Gary and Steve, remember a so called person has to have a brain to be stupid.   While attending a school in the Chicago area there was a ball diamond behind the place they were putting us up.  There were geese all over the place. As soon as my engine started they would clear the area.  then when I landed they would move back in.  I managed 4 flights before I got cold. D>K

Nice thing about having just a cat;  I don't have to bother taking him (her?) for a daily walk.  I just have to get up once in a while and open the door when (it) wants to go in/out.

Residents of our Condo group are required to keep all pets on a leash - cats included!

We still lose a few pets to Coyotes every year and often because people ignore the rules. One lady even lost a pet bird, when a large hawk snatched it off her shoulder while she was walking.

Our condo groups are right on the border of the TV Nature park in Beaverton, so no shortage of predators roaming the area day or night.
