Is Dupli-Color Auto Spray fuel proof
« on: March 08, 2007, 05:09:00 AM »
I liked the colors available in Dupli-Color auto spray.   I painted my new Barnstormer with Dupli-color's Classic White and Medium Maui Blue Metallic auto spray.

After 20 hours I did an unscientific test on the paint.

I used some of the paper and masking tape removed from the model for test samples and placed drops of fuel on the paint samples.  I let 10% fuel stand 2 minutes then wiped the fuel up with a Kleenex.  No Blue paint rubbed off.  For the second test I used 25% 1/2A fuel.  after setting 2 minutes the blue paint wiped off the paper.

Conclusion: Dupli-Color auto spray is mildly fuel proof, but for maximum protection it needs to be covered with a coat of Clear Fuel Proof Paint.

Yes that has been my conclusion also with most rattle can enamel paints.  It seems the Nitro is the real paint eater.  I use spray on Wattle Estapol poly urethane laquer as a fuel proofer.

I do not know what type of paint Dupli-Color is but here is what I learned from using it.

If sprayed in relative thin coats it dries to the touch in a few minutes.  Heavier coats, that can (will) run, take about 1 hour to dry to the touch.

Mineral Spirits will not affect it even after just 1 minute.
Denatured Alcohol will remove it with rubbing even after 1 hour.

Hi Clancy, Warren,

Duplicolor is an automotive Acrylic Lacquer (unless the can plainly states "Acrylic Enamel" in bog letters on the front).

I have used a LOT of it, but I always clear clat with something that is fuel proof which can include clear dope.  Sig Lite Coat has never given me a bad reaction over Duplicolor lacquer.  I also use two part auto urethanes for clear coats.
