Hi All,
Was looking at an Intrepid XL the other day. I was surprised to see that the tail plane was of all sheet construction. Is this as per plan? I thought the fin was sheet and the rest built up to something thicker than sheet (approx 3/16 thick). Maybe the builder modified the plane, there was no evidence of a tip weight box or adjustable leadouts, so maybe the builder had his own ideas?
Regatds,
Andrew.

Hi Andrew
You may have a conterfeit plan, The Intrepid XL has a stab that is 1/2 inch thick, the plan shows either 3\8 inch wood cut out and geo ribs set in sheeted with 1\16 balsa. Or 1\2 inch sheet or the Foam stab-elev sheeted with 1\16.
The plan also clearly shows a leadout guide and a tip weight box, and many other features
It also shows Bellcrank details on how to:
Horn clips how to
CF mat doublers , a technique I developed by in the 80s
It shows details on how to make wheel pants with mounts
It shows detail on how to make the tips
It shows detail on how to make the motor crutch
Some of the details on the plans are also shown here on the main Stunt Hangar page under Building tips http://stunthanger.com/tips.htm
It is best when building my planes to get the plans from me, and stay away from others selling counterfit versions that many have bad problems with the plans
I even have seen people making and selling my foam wings that are not the correct size A\R or airfoil.
I can send you a real set of the plans
Regards
Randy

Hi Andrew
this is what the older SV-12 XL plan looks like

Thank you Randy!
The plane was for sale at one of the UK meets. It had a VF40 and carbon pipe and was very well built and obviously had little time on the engine or airframe. The price was very attractive, but the airframe was a little too big for me to handle. I was on the lookout for a 40VF and it seemed a good deal for pipe, C/F undercarriage and 40 VF, the airframe was an extra, as it were!
If I were to go for a piped plane, I would still go for your Staris. The vendor said that the Intrepid XL had been built from plans by a deceased fellow club member a few years ago, so it may have been from a pirate plan! (Can't understand why anyone should buy a pirate plan, your prices are very reasonable indeed!)
Regards,
Andrew.

There is the possibillty of the plan being legit. I have on some planes changed construction on a component. H^^

where does it say it was built from a bogus plan? the question was "is this per plan?" which obviously it isn't,
many people change how they build things to suit their personel requirements/likes/wants or needs.
perhaps the "deceased builder" liked fully sheeted tail surfaces

Plans?
Who follows the plans?
I never have, Plans? what plans? ???

Hii Andrew
It sounds like he just deleted those items on the plane when he built it.
