I am told this is a Tom Lay engine. It is an OS 35. But someone wrote on the box something about a ST .46.
Any ideas?

T&L is Tom Lay
He usually vibra penciled a serial number and T&L onto the case of the engines he sold

I see no engraving on the case. Was more curious about the pen and ink writing on the box regarding ST .46

I wrote that on there, based on what Tom told me about the guts of that engine. I told you that when I sold it to you. D>K He used ST .46 guts in the OS .35 frame. He did stuff like that all the time. H^^

I hear you. Just wondering. I ran it yesterday. Maybe I should run an 11 inch prop instead of a 10.

Maybe post a photo of the engine also?? If it's a hybrid like Ty says, it shouldn't look just like a stock OS.35S , I wouldn't think.

I will send photos. It was an RC engine and converted to CL. I looked up the RC engine on Model Engine Tests.

I still have one. Used it at the 77 Nat's.
It is an OS 35S bottom end and ST 46 top end. Speced out to a 0.40. Very good running motor.
He called it a TL 40.

I too have one of these TL .40 OS .35 engines converted to .40 via ST .46/29 parts. In his letter that came with the engine, he suggested that only a 10-6 prop and only castor oil be used. My engine is a one flip starter and is very smooth running! I must use it more often!

As a way of confirmation, wouldn't the stock piston be lapped and the ST piston be ringed? Easy to check!

One can see the port runner / windows .
the Early ST .46 liners only a half mm or so oversize . or one . in a OS 40 youd get a .45 , theyed go in the ball race OS .35s too . Likely NOT the Later . 40 , which wouldnt make sense anyway .

Shouldn't we be able to see some 'ring posts' in the picture that looks into the exhaust port? Just asking, I don't have a ST G.21 .46 to reference. I also wonder if the head is made from barstock, to suit the larger bore? I'd kind of expect it to be spaced upwards, rather like the ST .46 was.
It also strikes me as strange that there is no "T&L" carved into the head or case. My G.51 came back with "DIRT" crossed off (I bought it used from Dirty Dan) and T&L carved on. It looks a mess, but runs well.
This makes me think that a Brian Gardner ST .46 ABC kit could be screwed into an OS .35S if one can bore the case to fit. Better fuel economy and no ring nonsense, so win-win. D>K Steve

I have a T&L 40 sitting in front of me. It has T&L stamped on top of the mounting lug on the transfer side and 056 stamped on the exhaust side lug. The Super Tigre head sticks up above the cylinder almost 1/8". The venturi is a taller spool shaped turning necked down in the middle and flared at the intake. The piston has one ring and of course the liner has port windows. The 35 stamping on the case has been ground off. There is about a 1/4" diameter hole drilled in the back of the case just below the exhaust for inserting the wrist pin. It is sealed off with epoxy. A Tigre needle valve is installed.
Other than the not clear possibility of port windows in the exhaust every thing else on your engine looks stock O S except for the needle valve assembly to me. Of course I can't see inside.
