Balsa is a survivor!
« on: September 07, 2015, 01:06:42 PM »
Quote from a recent article on experiments with subjecting certain tropical trees to higher ambient temperatures

"Winter’s data hints at one such change in forest structure. The three species that did the best under the highest temperature regime were the coralwood tree (Adenanthera pavonina) a species of fig tree called Ficus insipida, and the balsa tree (Ochroma pyramidale). Each is what Winter called “pioneer species,” fast-growing trees that can quickly move into cleared areas and take over. (F. insipida ups the ante, beginning life as vine that climbs up dead trees—and also living ones, eventually strangling them.)"

Hooee, limitless balsa in 2100! Right here at home, too. Grow your own!  LL~
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Balsa is apparently so light because of its extreme growth rate. Later it sucks up lots of water and usually collapses under its own weight.

Trivia, for those who do not speak Spanish:  Una "balsa" is a "raft."

After WW2. Most of the surplus balsa (Raft Wood) went to kit manufactures at about close to free prices.

If I had my own Balsa tree, it would get all the water it needs! Drought be darned. And I would shore it up as needed, just tell me how to raise it for 6 pound or less stock!  y1

Year round growing season, lots of water on well drained soil will do it........ The faster it grows, the lighter it is.

I suspect you want to cut it down before it needs shoring up.

Get a vacation cottage in Ecuador, maybe?

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Change that to "survivalist shack" and you have it. He could work on any manifestos he might be considering, too.
