Information on the 2007 Brodak Fly-In.
« on: March 20, 2007, 06:12:02 AM »
The invitations for the 11th annual Brodak Fly-In are now being sent out.  #^ #^ #^

There is one small error to take note of.  ???
On the white registration form that you mail back, it gives the night of the buffet dinner as Saturday.  n1
The dinner is on FRIDAY, as stated on the yellow schedule.  ;D

If you are not a Brodak customer and have not attended previous Fly-Ins, you may not be on the mailing list. No problem – just call 724 966 7335 or e-mail (flyin@brodak.com) or write to Brodak Mfg, 100 Park Ave, Carmichaels, PA, 15320 and you will receive all required information.

Since the Fly-In is very busy, we like to get as much done in advance. Therefore, pre registration is mandatory.
Everything is explained on the yellow sheet.  y1

Also, if you plan to attend, I suggest booking your rooms now – if you wait till the last minute, you may be very disappointed.  :'( :'( :'(

Bob putting out the call to reserve a motel room in the end of 2006 is cruel. Making me lust for the Brodak Bash five and a half months away. Don't know anything else like it that makes old fat guys smile and run around for five days plus. (Tho some will lie and insist they can still do the other stuff-- not for five days plus!) Even Dan Banjok and Palko get burnt out. They're barely of age to vote. What do they know at 42 and 25. Some guys will bring beautiful stunning planes, some guys will show up with humorous wrecks, classes for all of that. Even can build junk in junk yard wars. Phil Cartier and crew will be up on this hill splatting high speed foamies. Banjok, Heinrich and Palko will be melting asphalt with a fire belching scale jet. etc. etc.

Hey, Dennis - better check that calendar - it's less than THREE months away!

Believe it or not, many people book rooms for the following year when checking out.

Remember, if something comes up, you can always cancel the room.
But, if you don't have a room ----------------------------

Yep, running around for five days plus, asking ourselves "does it get any better?"

We know the answer.

I'm actually there for 9 days. I arrive Saturday to start setting up and leave on Sunday afternoon.
It's actually a bit eerie to stand on the field on Sunday afternoon - the event is over and I'm there alone - most thought provoking.

Hi Bob,

I would love to be able to come over for that... it sounds very cool.  What is the actual date of the Fly-In?  Anyone care to sponsor me? lol

2007 Brodak Fly-In. June 12 to June 16
« Reply #4 on: March 20, 2007, 09:28:16 AM »

Like a dummy, I forgot the date(s).

June 12 to June 16 are the actual competition dates but many people show up as early as Saturday to play,
 help out, hang around, whatever.

Six circles and plenty of parking.
No need to pack tools, you can use his shop.

Here are some pictures I took of John's place.

In the aerial view, you can see the circles. Wherever there is a concrete crescent, thats the takeoff pad.
One circle, just above the house has no paving.
The "donut" is paved and unbelievably flat.
Six excellent circles in all.
Friends can fly there any time they wish.

He created the little park so his friends and guests can have a place to relax, cook out, whatever.

All you seen was not done for him personally - it was all in the interest of Model Aviation.
The Fly-In is now the biggest C/L event on the planet.

Virtually everyone who attends makes plans for the following year and the event just keeps getting better.
Actually, a very small and insignificant minority found things to complain about. Most of them no longer attend.
GOOD!!!!!

This information was sent to me by Joe Messinger:

Bob,

Here's a list of some of the better motels/hotels in Morgantown:

Holiday Inn Express: (304) 291-2600

Lakeview Resort: (304) 594-1111  (Golf Course and spa.)

Ramada Inn: 1-800-834-9766

Waterfront Place Hotel: (304) 296-1700

Euro-Suites: (304) 598-1000

Comfort Inn: (304) 296-9364

Econo Lodge: (304) 599-8181

These are some of the places I know to be good.  There are others that might
be fine.  Morgantown Chamber of Commerce will have a full list of motels and
hotels if someone wants to explore that.

As you mentioned, maps are available at the motels.  If you want, I can send
directions to Brodak's from Morgantown.

Hope this helps.

Joe

This is a beautiful way of honoring people who have left us
It is in John's back yard, next to the flagpole.

Morgantown, WV is about 25 miles from Brodaks.  It's the home of West Virginia University.  Takes about 35 minutes to get to Brodak's from Morgantown.  Nice drive through the country.

Not much going on in June from a sports standpoint at WVU so there should be plenty of rooms available at lower rates than during "football" season.

I'll be going from Morgantown to Brodak's tomorrow and will make note of the route numbers and milage.  I'll post that for anyone who might be interested.

Or, you can check "Map Quest."  Fill in Morgantown, WV to Carmichaels, PA.  It'll show details.

Just mailed my entry form, 4 events, PA, Classic, Profile and Old Time..

The really great thing I like about the Brodak event is it's like the contests we attended in the 70's where everything control line is flown but on a much larger scale.

Bob Disharoon: I'm basically a sport flyer too but to me the Fly-In is the ultimate.

Yes, I enter but strictly for fun.  #^ #^ #^

Here's what I suggest - just go, enter one  or more events. For your basic $10.00, you'll get to fly one event plus you get the fantastic all-you-can-eat buffet, put on by Buzz and her group.  y1

You can't really appreciate it until you experience it.  ~^

Many arrive early. I get there on Saturday and work with John Wegenka and Len & Chris Burgess to start setting up the circles. As long as we're not working on a circle, it's open for flying.

You must have an AMA license, safety thong and be subject to a pull test even if you're just practicing.

DIRECTIONS TO BRODAK'S FROM MORGANTOWN, WV. (app. 25 mi).
---------------------------------------------------------------
*Let's start from Interstate 68 which runs east/west through Morgantown.  Traveling east or west on I-68, take the Pierpont exit to Rt 119.

*Turn -north- on 119 to Point Marion, Pa. (app.7 mi.).

*Turn -left- in Point Marion at the first (only) intersection in the town. Go straight 1/8 mile and turn -right- onto Rt 88 heading north.  Cross over the bridge (Monongahela River) and stay on 88 -north- to Carmichaels, PA (15 miles on 88).

*While on 88 you will come to a stop sign at the small town of Dillner, Pa.  Turn -right- at a stop sign there and continue on Rt. 88.  There's a stop light at the intersection of Rt. 88 and Rt. 21.  Continue (straight ahead and cross Rt.21) on 88 to Carmichaels. (3 mi.).

*Look for a large "Sky View" drive in sign on the left.  Directly across from the Sky View sign, turn -right- onto Inwood St.  Straight on Innwood to Brodak's. (app. 1/2 mi.).  You can't miss it. . .

The scheduling couldn't be any better.

You can extend your trip by only three days and take in the T&D in Toronto, June 9-10, fly another 8 events, and only go 359 miles out of your way.  Monday, June 11 on the road, perfectoooo.

When we go flying for a few days to somewhere nice like that we usually set up tents and camp out.  Does anyone do that at Brodaks? ie do they have a camping area?  It looks like a very nice place to spend a few days.
