Bad balsa question
« on: December 26, 2009, 06:26:11 PM »
Not wanting to cut 4 inch X 48 inch sheets into 3 X 36 stock, I ordered 24 sheets of contest balsa. When it arrived 8 of the sheets were split lengthwise for up to 7 inches on one end.  Just to be safe, I ordered 4 extra sheets as I wanted 20 but this is 1/3 of the order. It is obvious the wood was cut from the same piece as the splits match when the pieces are laid beside each other. This wood is from a well known company and I will not mention which one it is. What I am posting this for is to see how you would approach this situation. I have not contacted the company yet.

I would let them know. You didn't order scratch and dent merchandise, you paid full price and should get undamaged goods.

Right! If the cracks would show in a digital picture, I'd email a picture along with my complaint. I'm sure that the person packing the order would have rejected the sheets, if they'd noticed. They were probably rushing to ship your order and many more before quitting time.  y1 Steve

Ditto what's been said.

Send a polite email or give them a call; most people will be eager to make it good, you want to know about the rest.

Bill, about one month ago, I had exactly the same problem with balsa for a very well known supplier (first time I had ordered from them in a long time).  I had several sheets that were split several inches lengthwise and the box that the order came in was in perfect condition.  Not the carrier's fault.  At first they did not want to replace the wood, but they finally did send me new wood.  I will go back to ordering from National Balsa from now on.

Just for the heck of it, was it A, B, or C grain...and how thick?

Also, was it bonded with shrink wrap or loose in the box? I've gotten it both ways.

What I'm getting at is whether some types of balsa might be harder to ship?

And yes, IMHO, the company should stand behind their product.

The wood was "a" grain, 1/8 inch thick. No damage to the box at all and was clear wrapped with other wood in the order. The other wood was fine.

As stated already, contact the supplier.  Sell the bad peices to a person like me as I have had sheets of wood that had to be glued back together along the grain.  HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Contact the seller! The last time I ordered wood, I ordered several 3/8X1/2 maple motor mounts. When the order came about 2 days. the balsa was great but the about half the motor mounts looked like pretzels. I called  the seller and they quickly sent replacements that were straight.

Hi Bill,

Maybe the person that packed the wood only looked at one end. You have to call them to be sure it wasn't just a mistake and if not a mistake let the rest of us know so we won't order from that company???? I believe ya just have to give them a chance, Gary

Hi Bill,
Did you contact the place that sold ya the wood and if ya did what answer did ya receive??? Just curious, cause most places I've deal with has stood behind what they sold, Gary (If they didn't stand behind what they sold would like to know who sold it to ya.)
