Flying Season?
« on: January 06, 2015, 05:34:43 PM »
I noticed it was close to 5 o'clock and the sun was still above the horizon.
Days are getting longer!  #^

Could it be fly season it right around the corner? I sure hope so.

Grab a drink, it's always 5 o'clock somewhere.

I hate Fly season, especially in the Adirondack State Park, NY.

If you do a little bit every day it will get done, or you can do it tomorrow.

Tucson reporting in.

January 7, 2015.  five planes at the circles this morning.

At 9:00 AM, about 68 degrees.  Blue sky.  Gentle breeze away from the morning sun.  Warmed to about degrees at noon.  Still gentle breeze though wind is in the forecast later today.

I know that it has never been explained before, but our flying season is from January 1 through December 31.

Oops.

Typo.  Now fixed to correctly say the season ends on December 31.

We have had several nights this past month when the temperature gets below freezing and has bee a bit chilly during the day to enjoy flying.  We are still at the field 4 or 5 days a week or more.

From my many years of living in this great part of the country you never know what the weather is going to be from day to day at times.  January and February have to be the two coldest months of the year.  Temps today in the teens and going down.  But, I guess that is why I stay here,  the variety in weather.

Here in Tucson we've had a little atypical cold weather (cold for us) for the past several weeks.  a few night temps in the 30's and some day temps in the 40's and 50's.  Today was back to normal in the high 60's early and 70's later in the day.

That's typical for Tucson.  At least it was before "Global Warming" became an issue.  Now since it seems to be colder I guess it's global cooling... LL~ LL~ LL~

At any rate it's typically pretty good here for flying year-round.

Not so good fo building because Honey-Do's are very year-round also!   mw~ LL~  excuses for not digging holes, planting trees, or painting things are slim to none!

I flew 4 flights on Tuesday here in Fort worth...50 degrees and light winds but RIGHT IN TO THE SUN! On the first flight I got fuel blown into my eyes and could barely hold them open to finish the pattern but by God i didi it ^-^
Flights after that were great...just do rounds around the sun and squares to the left. THEN....next day it is high of 35! Today is high of 29! texas us notorious for this abrupt change in temps overnite...can't wait 'till June...90s every day...

Chris, this reminds me of the time I went to the DMAA field way back before there was a fence.  Had to drive down off Loop 12 through a ditch to get to the drive to the circles.  Would go out after classes but mostly on weekends to fly.  It was a Sunday and I was the only one there.   Shirt sleeve flying, but when I started to load up to go back to the complex I put  my jacket on.   After I got back to the complex went to the Dairy Queen that used to be across the road and had my over coat on trying to stay warm.   A few days later it was jacket time again.   To really date the period of time, the RC guys flew just north of the field that is now a soccer complex.

I used to fly there back in the 90s...met Tom Farmer, Bob Gieseke, Doug Moon..bunch of good flyers out there. One day we were having a contest and it started out beautiful...sunny, light breezes, birds chirping...the day drug on and by the time it was time for intermediate finals the wind started howling out of nowhere...I mean blowin'!!
Everybody but three of us dropped out cuz it was just so windy...me and the other two went ahead and flew anyway...crashed my forerunner...took third that day though...still have the trophy!!
