Inexpensive fuel line
« on: December 23, 2013, 12:51:56 PM »
Inexpensive fuel line Can be found at Home Depot.  In the plumbing department I spotted this 'micro-fuel line' in IDs of 3/32", 7/64", and 1/8".  Ten foot roles are $3.99.  It looks and feels like the old Perfect line we got at the hobby shop except it has an orange cast to it.  I still like silicone but got some to try out.  Even if you have to change it often its surely cheap enough.  Won't pin-hole like silicone either.  Being called a 'fuel line' maybe it will stand up to some of the stuff we are known to cram down the pipe.

If it's Tygon type or a similar compound, that may be why they colored it and call it "fuel line," because it is for kerosene. Just a guess. Should work for glow fuel if it is.

So, where is micro fuel line used around the home?

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

In your still, Tim.  It also works for Ugly Stick lead out guides.

Dan, and all ...

I like an occasional diesel. Tygon stands up well to ether/kerosene fuels, and I expect also to gasoline-base spark fuels (? new spark OS engines, too?) A local small-engine shop (riding lawnmowers, karts, etc.) carries Tygon. Crossed my mind it might be a reasonable-price alternative to silicone for glows.

To simplify things... Only one kind of fuel line to work with... Silicone is unusable for gasoline and kerosene/ether fuels. It swells - fast and dramatically - in them.

As a test, I soaked a short piece of Tygon in 25% nitro fuel. Within a few days, it hardened and shrank. Color cleared and darkened, too.

Another source of inexpensive "fuel line" is used for aquarium air pumps. Kind of like the old, clear Perfect stuff, and hardens in a short period of time. Weeks, for example, a pre-flight inspection consideration, but at a very favorable price. Works with glow, diesel and gasoline fuels.

Chain saws weed eaters and the like use tygon tubing now. It seems to hold up better than the old neoprene they use to use.
