Indy CL Club Monthly Flying session
« on: June 01, 2010, 10:03:40 PM »
Four members flew several flights.

First picture is Jack Sheeks and the electric powered model he flew "around the parking lot."

Second picture is Steve Couch and his brand new Bansheeks that flies great but had an oversize tank.  In the background is Skip Miller, club Sec./Tres.  Steve also flew my Fox 35 powered Barnstormer so that I could get pictures of it in flight.

Third picture is of Clancy Arnold (me) with the Somebodys Original.  Note the connector plugged into the top of the wing tip for the U/Tronics throttle control.  I flew it twice, good line pull and responsive but the engine needs a tear down and maybe new bearings.  The engine does not get to go to the Brodak Fly-In.  On the ground beside me is my Fox 35 powered Barnstormer.

The fourth picture is Bobby Pardue, Club President, working on his BiSlob.  It had engine problems and he only got one flight on it.  Beside Bobby is his CL Sport Scale model.

The fifth picture is of the flight line.  Models range from Jack's Electric RC to my Cox .010 Micro Barnstormer and Cox .020 IBTW Barnstormer.

All pilots and planes returned home in good condition with no repairs required.

Thanks Glen.  I tried to return it to the way the original builder had painted it.
With the OS 25 FSR and U/Tronics Control it will fly at what ever speed you want.  I will pull the OS 25 FSR out of my Super Ringmaster and put it in the Somebodys Original for the Brodak Fly-In.

You should fly it once,

Clancy,
That "Someones Original" looks very similar to the original Ringmaster by Harry Williamson(yes before Kania)I have the plans out in the shop with the original MAN article (or Airtrails)Here is a crummy .bmp I have converted...The elevator looks modified, but the wing and fuse looks alike.

Here are the specs. on the model.  Note the wing is straight with a fixed flap like a Barnstormer.

Somebodys Original -
Weight 2 lb 10.2 oz,
Wing cord 12 inch root, 10 1/2 inch tip,
Wing span 48 inch,
Wing area 500 sq inch,
Wing loading 12.15 oz per sq foot.
CG location 1 3/4 inch behind leading edge,
Calculates CG is at 15.56 % of average cord.

My bad Clancy! I looked again at the tail moment of the two.Unless it was a major plans bashing, it is not Williamson's Ringmaster!

Removed the engine today and tore it down.  The bearings are not the best but still runable.  The engine was coated inside with congealed castor.  Had to scrape it to break it loose.  I have an almost new OS 25 FSR in stock but without time for a test flight, I will not chance it.  So, the Super Ringmaster with Marvin contolling the throttle goes to Brodak's and the Somebodys Original has to stay home.

I got over my MAD and replaced the engine in the Somebodys Original.  I  replaced it with my spare OS 25 FSR which is almost new.  The top of the piston is light tan color.

Last winter I bought some OS engines on eBay.  3 40 FP's, 3 25 FP's and 3 25 FSR's.
One of the 40 FP's and one of the 25 FSR's were in like new condition.  I stopped bidding on 25 FP's after I ran the first 25 FSR I received.  It turned the same prop on the same fuel at almost 1,000 RPM faster.

While I was at it I replaced the Piston and Cylinder in the engine I removed from the S/O.  Marvin Denny had sold me the remains of an OS 25 FSR that has a crack in the case and a bent crank but a good P&C.

Test ran the engine and decided to go ahead and take the Somebodys Original to the Brodak Fly-In.

Clancy, it's good that all returned without need of repairs, especially the PILOTS!!  (Old ships are fragile.)

I asked Jack Sheeks and he does not remember circles by the river.  Wonder if you are thinking of the park in Muncie?  There are two circles by the river there.

Last night 4 of us decided to go fly.  I needed  to get a test flight in on the Somebodys Original after the engine change.  I almost lost it.

The parking lot we fly off of has a main entrance which is where we park our cars but there is a second drive in from the side street.  After taking off and getting comfortable with the power available (WOW) from the like new OS 25 FSR it happened.

Steve Couch arrived and used the alternate entrance and stopped at the edge of the parking lot to watch.  Then a woman drove in that entrance, went out on the grass to get by Steve.  Steve honked at her and she stopped.  He told her that I was flying and to please wait.  She Said "I am late for a meeting" and away she went right under my model airplane.  She passed about 30 feet from me while I kept the model high.

Thanks to Steve honking his horn, that got my attention, and then I kept an eye on her just in case she did exactly what she did.  I would have been bad if I had not been watching her as I could have hit her windshield with a 40 ounce airplane going wide open.  That was what I was testing and it goes like XXXX.

The next morning I was still shaking thinking that if Steve had not been there she would have just driven right into my flight path with no warning.

On the District 7 CL Forum Frank Carlisle told what his local club does for safety.

They have a whistle and if a pedestrian or car is headed towards the flying area they blow the whistle to alert the person that is flying.  That is like when Steve blew his car horn at the old lady I heard it also and started watching her.  That probably saved an accident.

Some people never learn.  I wonder how they even got a drivers license.  At the school they have cones showing what drives are closed and where to drive.  I am on a one way drive and have stopped several from coming in the drive.  If I could hand out tickets I could probably go thru several books before some of them catch on.  Even teachers turning left out of a drive that is no left turn and no seat belts on teachers or parents.  But, here in Shawnee the patrolmen are too busy at other crossings handing out speeding tickets and drivng thru the stop sign we use.  At one field I used to fly at, had a guy drive right up beside me while flying and ask what I was doing.  I immediately told him if he didn't clear the area there was a possibilty of a big dent or broken windshield going to happen to his car as well as having to pay for a broken airplane.  I think the patrol man that was watching me that day got him for driving on park property. I had it wide open to see how fast it could go.  It was the "Somebodys Original" that Marvin Denny gave me to rework powered by an almost new OS 25 FSR with it's RC carb and my U/Tronics Single Channel control.  The plane weighs 40.2 ounces.  I think we were in the low 4 second range.
