Title: If you were a fish, what kind of fish would you be?
Post by: steven yampolsky on August 29, 2007, 10:25:17 PM
If you were to look at your pattern, which maneuver do you find most difficult to fly?

For me, it's inverted laps. I have to focus ALL of my attention on flying nice and level.

Well I wish I was a catfish,
Swimming in the deep blue sea.
All you pretty womens,
Fishing after me,
Fishing after me.

Don't take this the wrong way. But  your airplane is out of trim. It should lock into level fight inverted and upright, without looking in clam weather it should go around like its on rails. Windy it will rise slightly into the wind and fall out of if. (SLIGHTLY)

Overhead eights.  No external reference points, equilibrium issue when the head is tilted back and lack of body flexibility to bend that far back to see the entire area that the maneuver is flown. Other than that... piece of cake!

Bob, you're making an assumption that it's a single model. I've flown MANY models, some were by past NATS winners who know the value of trim. Trust me, it's not the trim, it's the pilot. What do YOU think is the toughest maneuver for YOU, regardless of a model.

It's the vertical 8 for me. Mostly because of the preceeding maneuver. I find that the horizontal square 8 takes the most concentration and timing. I think after completing it, I tend to let down a bit. I have to remind myself to keep my concentration for the vertical 8.

Second is probably the reverse wingover. Probably be better for me if it were later in the pattern. Just diving at the ground to pull out inverted before you're really settled in, I guess. It's easier if I've flown a lot.

Ok so keep in mine I am an intermidiate pilot,, the manuevers I just survive for now dont bother me to much cause I am just making the shape for now (more or less, its not like I dont try) So for now, my nemisis is,,, drum roll, outside squares! I tend to get tense when I make that first drop and hesitate,, but they are coming along. the reverse wingover is one that doesnt bother me,, of course keep in mind my manuever bottoms are still 7 ot 8 feet (yeah Randy Iknow, my 7 foot is your 10 feet, )

Another beginning Intermediate flyer---for me, the Hourglass.  The last corner really shows your nerve or lack thereof, even with 7 (or 8) foot bottoms.  It's a little easier if I actually go to the top of the circle, but not a lot.

Most of the guys I fly with (none above Intermediate level) fly the Hourgalss downline almost as inverted flight--I am working hard to avoid that.

Never Surrender!!

Jim

Being an old Mopar fan, it'd have to be a Barracuda!  y1 Actually, I think it would make an awesome stunt plane name.

Since I don't think I've ever gotten too many 40's on anything except some really exceptional landings with my Toni, (man that thing can land!) I'd say all the stunts are hard to do perfectly. Funny thing is, whatever stunt I'm working on at the time ends up my best stunt, then I have to go back and tweak the others all over again to catch them up.

If I was forced to choose, I'd say the hardest one would be a toss up between the clover, then the RWO. The RWO has obvious reasons. But the Clover is deceptive with it's many loops and intersections to make just right and looking all over the place it's easy to loose your reference spot almost as bad as the overhead 8 (though my big nose helps, HAH!).  LL~ That first and third loop can be rough if the wind is shifting and you get dead air or a puff in your face.

Others are more scary, but the clover is the hardest to do anywhere near right. The good news is, it's probably the hardest one to judge also, so you probably get away with more goof ups under the judges radar in the clover than most other stunts.

Actually, there IS a stunt plane called the Barracuda. It was published in Jan/Feb 1963 American Modeler. Also on Tom Wilk's CD.

cheers,

The car would be '70 Challenger R/T   y1

The maneuver would be the reverse wing over.  Not only is it difficult to consistently hit it, but the wingover really ends up setting the "tone" of your flight.  Smoke it, and you can really get the judges attention.  Do an average (ie high pullout) one, and watch the judges snooze the rest of the flight.....

I think I'd just be a Sport Fish. My Dad called me "Sport" a lot. I was too lazy for him to call me "Work", even tho I finally figured out that work was kinda important in the grand scheme of things. I sure wouldn't be no "Angel Fish", and I'm not going to 'splain why.   >:D Steve
