Painting Angela's Lightning Streak
« on: February 23, 2014, 01:36:02 PM »
Well yesterday we stole a few hours and painted. It all went pretty well and she struggled a little learning to control the spray pattern. Why is it the first thing people want to do is "squirt" paint" by that I mean that kinda random shake, splatter, drool thing? Had a hard time getting her to move smoothly at the right speed. Actually I've come to the conclusion see needs some glasses, when a 12 year old CAN'T see something I can, there's a problem.

So without further blabber, I give you Angela's painting project. I've also added a picture of her dressed for church, she's a really sweet young lady. 2 more weeks and she will come over and finish it with all the trim and hardware. she's excited, SHE'S GONNA LEARN TO SOLDER!!!!!!

Nicely done, Angela!
Aluminum foil - what a great idea!  I just painted a fuselage and usee trash bags around the wings that kept pulling away from the tape.  Hence, some leakage onto the wing.

I'll try the foil next time.

The airplane and Angela both look just fine.  Angela does look strange without her new hat, though.

I don't understand the use of foil. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Charles, I gave up on paper after I had a bleed-through that ruined a paint job, foil is cheap enough and there is zero change of a bleed-through, that's good enough for me!

Actually Angela isn't my daughter, she's my girlfriend's daughter and very likely future step daughter. I've always hated that term and at the point it happens I will call her and she will be.....my daughter.

It works pretty well, and it wants to stay where you put it. It tends to leave dark smudges on paint, not much problem on Monokote aside from a few easily-removable dents here and there.

A quick swipe with polishing compound will take care of that but I never really had any problem.

Hey, we all had to learn how to use the old spray gadget at one time or another.   I just sprayed two planes last week.   The plane looks great and she looks even prettier all dressed up.   My self even after seeing on one of Windy's tape the use of aluminum foil, I never tried it.   I am now using a material called Press and Seal,  it is a food wrap from the grocers.   It stays where you put it and so far no leakage any where.

I might try that, the aluminum is a little clumsy.

Thanks all, the 2 weeks intervals were frustrating at first, but I've found it gives me time to do my own building. Angela will be ready as soon as the weather breaks and it looks like I'll have the Legacy ready too. I have to say this, Angela is the most "engaged" young person I've ever worked with though my grandson Brandon was as well. She sticks with it and does not get distracted like most, when she's building, she's building and that really nice because I don't feel like I'm wasting my time. She said she's afraid to break it so getting her into the Beginner pattern will probably start with my Skyray and that's OK, that's what its for. Our August contest (which I'm CDing) falls on a weekend when she's with he Mom so she'll be able to come and hopefully fly. Mom is learning to fly too so since I'll be tied up with the contest maybe they can be a mother/daughter team!

Randy,
I have some experience in helping the young ladies out so will lend a hand (at least a flipping finger) during the contest.  Maybe I can get Michael to help out as well.

Bill,
She is currently working hard at becoming an adult.  Has not had a handle in her hand for some time now.  Did talk her into launching for me when I was back in colonies a couple of years ago.

Thanks Jim, it's really enjoyable and relationship building. Angela has a bit of a withdrawal problem since her parents divorce plus she still really doesn't know what to make of me carrying through with the things I tell her I'll do. Her dad told her all the time he would do things with her but then never did and she just came to the conclusion that that's how it is. Now she's finding out it's not and that she's valuable enough to spend time and effort with, which of course she is.

Just remember that when the time comes to make it permanent.  I have let my kids down several times, maybe too many times.   What with work and other issues.
