Ice-O-Lated Contest - Challenging but Fun
« on: February 24, 2008, 03:18:08 PM »
Anytime a contest is held in February in the Midwest, the weather is a challenge.  Yesterday, we scraped and shoveled snow from the site only to wake up this morning to another inch.  Bob Arata, Fearless Contest Director, and Steve Smith, Fearless Flier, took turns clearing the clumps of ice from the pad.  The stunt fliers had a good day.  The speed guys didn't fare so well.  Results are posted in the "Contest Results" section of Stunt Hanger.

I was really sorry to miss it this year.  I started feeling a little sick Thursday, got worse Friday afternoon, went to the doctor on Saturday and found it was the flu.  Allen B. called me this evening to see how we we're doing and told me there was a pretty good turnout considering the weather.

Looks like fun.  Hard to make the call when the snow levels are not that deep on whether to go with the wheels or put on a ski.  When I made it out last week, no problem on that one, 12 inches of snow called for the ski.  One of these days we will have to make the trip down.

I moved from Pennsylvania down to North Carolina to minimize my encounters with snow.  We've had a few days in the sixties recently.

Emmy and I would have been there, but, didn't like the weather report.  At least the Experts flew according to score cards.  Anyway there is next year.  DOC Holliday

That is one of the many things I miss about not being in the sport anymore, I remember many an Ice-O-Lated contest, I have seen warm days and cold days but no matter what kind of weather all had a great time because of the friendships that have come together to participate in the get together. I hope to someday build again, until then I will live vicariously thru all that I have met thru the years within this wonderful sport.

Terry,

I haven't made it out with a plane yet, I think a couple of the other guys have.  The weather hasn't cooperated when I've had the chance to get out.  Give me a call next time you're coming to town and I'll give you directions and meet you there if I'm free.  I'm scheduled for knee surgery on April 1, so I'll have some time on my hands after that.

Terry and I got there 3 hours to early on Saturday and had to pull "snow shovel" duty.  That was a lot of work for second place beginner.  Had a great time though Bill and I will be back next year to try for first.  See ya when it gets warmer.  H^^
