I Won, Too!

A night of surprises, for sure but I decided to stick my toe into politics (a non-partisan role) and filed for a special election for an open city council race in our cozy little suburb of 9500 (Arden Hills) of the Twin Cities.  The 84 year old incumbent died last fall from injuries sustained in a traffic accident. He was a pillar in the community.  A temporary member was appointed last January until a special election could be held since there are 2+ years remaining on the original term and the law states the remainder of that term could only be filled by special election.

I and a former member of the city council squared off and I came out on top with 62+% of the vote.  I had served 8 years on the city's parks, trails and rec committee as well as an election judge since 2004.  My wife and I represent the city on the area's Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Committee.  We are both USAF vets.

We have a mega development project to tackle as the 427 acre former Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant (TCAAP) was declared surplus, purchased by the county and is being redeveloped with input from county, city, local business and the general public.  My campaign position was to preserve the city's vision of amount of green space/recreation amenities.  The master developer wants tall condos and densely-packed housing on the site to maximize tax revenue.

It is my goal to put a CL circle put up there.  The lesson of 'if you can't beat them - join them' applies here?
I take my seat on the 5 member council starting in January.

My dad commanded the TCAAP and we lived in Fridley in the late 60s...I went to Spring Lake Park Jr high

I think we lived on Van Buren street

a lot of history with the TCAAP you might explore

Dad and I flew his and my models in Melody Manners park because no one could do anything inside TCAAP....lots of fervent 5.56mm  Viet Nam ammunition production ongoing

If a Flying site is indeed created on the former TCAAP property, I might just drive up there and fly a Ringmaster in honor of my father...the commander during the overpopulation of deer fiasco!.....grin....look it up.....very very controversial

It looks like we need to follow your example, in an effort to get ourselves a new flying site. The thing we always run into is the question "How many of our city residents do this controline thing?". The problem is that there's one in this town and two in that town, and the city's attitude is "not our problem".  We try to push the idea that we'll bring in spending of the throngs that would attend our contests, but that's definitely stretching the truth! Any ideas?  Steve
