I took a gamble and lost on eBay
« on: March 10, 2008, 12:28:41 AM »
Just a heads up to watch out for the Australian seller named "margiemay02"

He is selling Cox Conquest 15 and OS Max 15 engines as NIB.

After being outbid on one of his engines, he emailed me and offered me one for $90 so I took a gamble and went for it. But the engine arrived water damaged and with a little bit of corrosion here an there.

The sale wasn't through ebay so I have no comeback. Just a warning folks, watch out for this guy. He's a new seller on eBay.

Hey Warren,
Did you contact him to let him know there was a problem? I kind of had the same experence with RCU. Boutht a LA 46 as NIB. The engine was new but the guy for some reason had taken the engine all apart and put the P&L in backwards. At first I did not get the type of response from him, but when I posted some bad feed back under his account I got him to resolve the issue.
You still may be able to leave some feed back on his account.

 Warren;

  I could be wrong here, but I believe you will find that this seller broke Ebay policy. I thought they couldn't offer you another deal like that. I would check this out and if he did, you've got him right where you want him.

A seller can make "Second Chance Offers" when:
You can make a Second Chance Offer to a non-winning bidder when:

      There is at least one non-winning bidder who accepts Second Chance Offers.
<AND>
      You have duplicate items for sale, and want to offer them to non-winning bidders in a single-item auction.

So, a second chance offer through ebay would have been OK - don't know how they could police
the solicitation of off e-bay sales to auction participants.  In any case, he should be contacted and
if he won't make a reasonable response, then ebay should be contacted to see just where this transaction
stands.

To be honest, it sounds a little like a scam.

(had a system crash in mid message so trying again)

Warren:
Just curious was it your intention to have this engine as a collectible or a runner? that might impact things you may want to try to restore - or preserve it.

Have you had a chance to open up the engine yet and check it internally?  I'd be afraid that if the engine was water damaged and/or stored dry the crank could be rusted and bearings could be shot...

Coupla years ago, I bid and won a K&B Torpedo Green Head .23, it was just beautiful. No box, was glad to get it for $45. When it got here, I opened it and quickly deduced it had a painted head...(good job, but painted!) Turning it over, I snapped that it had a lot of play in the con rod! Off with the backplate, and that rod big end had so much play...It went into Overtime!
The crank mic'd egg-shaped, .002"!!!
  I cried the blues on the SSw site, and no less than THREE wonderful guys volunteered parts, would accept no money. (even when they found out it was for a B Team Racer!)
The seller had taken the 5th, Ebay wanted it 'settled between parties'...I had my .23 the hard way, a good runner, after I coated it with Castor...
Generally, I have had good luck.

Guys,

Dennis, I purchased it as a collector as I have no real use for a motor like this, but I have always wanted one.

Wynn,   When I first saw the engines on eBay I emailed the seller and asked a few questions. He said he had 20, all NIB but he didnt know much about them.  At that point he had 2 up on eBay.  I bid on the 5th one he put up and was outbid at $91. So knowing he had more, I emailed him and asked if he was going to be doing any 2nd Chance offers.

He made me a 2nd chance offer by email and I had to do Bank deposit.  I questioned this and he said take it or leave it. "So I took the gamble"

The motor he sent me was like new in box and was all there including intructions, stickers, spanner and allen key BUT the box had been wet on the bottom at some stage.  The cardboard on the bottom is all wrinkled and buckled like when it get wet and dries out.  The spanner and allen key are corroded and the bottom of the motor and bottom side of the spinner are mildly corroded. I was able to clean it up a bit with some brasso but it is still very noticeable.

Not good enough to put in a collection.  It turns over smoothly and has very good compression so I am sure it would be a good runner, but I have no use for a twin ball race 2.5cc high performance engine.

I emailed this guy many times and got no reply until I suggested I might report him. This got an immediate response, 6 emails in fact of threats and abuse.

So this is definitely a guy to steer clear of.  He has offered to give me my money back but I dont trust him and am no longer interested in talking to him. So I will keep it and remember that it owes me 100 bucks.

BTW I have reported him for selling outside eBay, circumventing ebay fees and harrasment.

Cheers
