Magazine cover photo from 71 Nats
« on: March 10, 2020, 11:26:17 PM »
Does anybody have a copy of Model Airplane News around Sept 1971 covering the 71 Nats?  My friend Preston Wilson was on the cover of the magazine flying his Black Tempest at the 71 Nats.  It would be extra special to him, as it would be to any modeler to have a copy of the magazine cover photo.

Are you sure it was MAN?  I just looked through 70-75 and don't see it.

September of 71 would have been too soon to have covered the NATS in a magazine at the time. Those were the days of 3 month or more lead times. Rack your brain a little more to be sure of the year, and I'll check all the major magazines from that time when o get home from work. I've looked up this kind of stuff many times for people and they are quite often in error on some detail.

Sorry for the late hour, been dealing with a VERY stubborn stopped up kitchen drain. I check all three major mags, Flying Models, American Aircraft Modeler, and M.A.N and no Preston Wilson on any of the covers of the September, October, or November issues. NATS coverage is traditionally ion the November issues of all three magazines. I didn't get to go through AAM or MAN, Flying Models didn't have his picture in the coverage inside either. The '71 NATS was the 40th Anniversary, and at Glenview NAS, so mention that to him and see if that jives with his memory. Like I mentioned before, my experience with looking this stuff up for people is that they almost never remember it correctly. After all, that was only 49 years ago! One guy swore that his picture was on the cover, but turned out it was inside the copy of the control line column. Tell him to try again keep us posted.

That was when men were men, women were women, and everyone knew which bathroom to use! That was a great issue of AAM. A neat Scheizer  f/f towline glider, and lots of other great modeling history of the 40th NATS. I just got done flipping through the coverage in the November Flying Models. I would give anything to go back to one of those NATS, fly a bunch of events, try for over all NATS Champion, sleep in the barracks, stay up all night building and repairing models in the hangers, then you could all come visit me in the hospital!!

I received a message from a member:

"On page 20 of the 1971 November Model Airplane News, there is a picture of Preston flying his Tempest in front of the Glenview Tower at the Nats.  Also, on page 22, there is a small picture of Preston with his plane in the Round and Round coverage of the Nats"

Does anybody have Model Airplane News November 1971 they would be willing to part with?  Preston would be thrilled to have it!

That picture of the Browns represents the year that the Air Force Team was beaten for the National Team Championship.  The Air Force had won that honor since the mid or early 50's.  The Browns figured out how to win and beat the Air Force team at their own game.

Those were the days when there were National teams, Club teams as well as individual Junior, Senior and Open Champions where individuals flew for points in as many as 9 events and there was a Scale Champion as well.  Never got much attention from the magazines.

1971 was the last year that the USAF had a World Championship contest and sent a team to the AMA Nationals. And yes, the USAF team was beaten by a group of mainly controline speed fliers. If you will notice in the picture, George ( Slugger ) Brown, Jr. has a jump suit on with an Air Force patch on it. He was a member of the USAF team. I do know that one of the fliers on the team that beat the USAF team was Danny Bartley, from North Carolina who was in his late teens at the time. I believe it was later that year that Danny lost his life in a car accident. Danny was a very talented individual and a great speed flier. His Father was a member of the famed Bartley, Garner, Huff Speed team from the '60's and '70's.
I attended the 1971 USAF World Wide Model Airplane Championships at Chanute AFB outside of Champaign, Illinois. I flew Fast Combat and Hand Launch Glider. The strongest competitor there was by far Reid Simpson. I had heard that he won pretty much all of the Free Flight events at previous contests. He did the same at the 1971 contest, also. Except the Hand Launch Glider event. I still have the trophy.
