I need help!
« on: January 14, 2007, 06:31:14 PM »
I've hooked up the controls to my plane (Tanager) that has wing flaps, which is a first for me. When the elevator is in the up position the wing flaps are in the down position. So is this correct? Or did I miss something. The hook up is as shown on the plans. My question is does this really work and what can I expect when flying?
Thanks.
Frederick

Hi Frederick,

Yes, that is correct.  The flaps work opposite the elevators.
By the flaps going "down" it increases the lift of the wing, and helps to turn the plane "up with the elevators "up", and vice versa.

As Bill said, you have the controls set up correctly.

Depending on what you flew before the Tanager, you can expect a sharper turn, and more resposive model....again... depending on what you flew previously

I might add, you want less flap movement than elevator movement.

Most planes are 1 to 1, though there are some circumstances where having more or less elevator to flaps it helpful.

If the plane is light you can use more elevator than flaps.

Frederick,
It is useful to understand the various functions of the controls on the airplane. As Bill (and others) mentioned, the flaps moving downward effectively increase the camber of the wing, giving more lift in the "up" direction. When the flaps move upward, this increase the "lift" in the downward direction. It is the lift that provides the force to do a loop for example.
So what does the elevator do? Think of it as the means to rotate the airplane. This rotation increases (or decreases) the angle of attack of the wing. Increasing the wing's angle of attack is the main way to increase the lift (the flaps are secondary actually).

Since you stated it was your 1st flapped stunter, you can expect it to start to turn much quicker and sharper than your previous models.  It would be smart to to start out with the line spacing at the handle narrowed down a bit from what you normally use, this will slow the controls down a bit and help smooth the plane out at first. Overcontrolling and larger than planned climbs and dives are common when you 1st fly a really responsive stunt plane.

If you don't have a handle with adjustable line spacing I highly recommend that you get one, there are several people listed in the vendor section of this board that sell handles, both ready to use, and kits that you can assemble and custom fit to your hand.

Bill Heher,
The adjustable control handle sounds like a good move. What would you recommend I set the spacing to? My previous C/L experience has been with a Tomahawk (Fox .35) and a Ringmaster (Fox .25).
Thanks.

Other "Bill" here......

I would set it slightly (but not a whole lot) less than the size of the Bellcrank.  3" BC, 2 1/2" spacing, etc..  If it gets too much less than the BC size, you run into other problems.

You will also notice this plane will fly more like a Caddilac and not a model T. especelie in the round munouvers. It's a whole new ballgame but really fun
