I need a can of (discontinued) Lustrekote...
« on: October 15, 2008, 05:44:57 PM »
I just found out today that "True Red" is discontinued. I've called all of my LHS's and they are all out too. I'm in the middle of painting a "Buster" with some that I had left over on the shelf, and I ran out. %^@
I need one can to finish the job, but I'd take two if I could find 'em. I would really prefer brand new...

 Thanks!

If your talking about the old Top Flite Lustercoat. Call Brodak Hobbies. 1-724-966-2726. They have all kinds of the stuff..

Really? Yes, it's the Lustrekote by Top Flite, I didn't realize Brodak ever carried it. I'll give 'em a ring.

 Thanks!

Also, take a swatch of your favorite monokote color down to Lowes.  Have the paint mixer girl scan the swatch and she can mix up that very color into a pint or quart can of white Rustoleum.

Thanks Louis, that's a tip I can use.. As I've stated many times I really dislike Lusterkote but have been left with few options when trying to match a Monokote color.. I'll remember this ...

 Still looking...

This will be my last Lustrekote model too. I'm in the process of getting set up to spray dope, finally. ;D

I've got 1 can that I think is new, it's weight is 13 3/4 oz. There is a hobby shop I go by on wed that has Lustrekote, if he has any I'll let you know.

As I am sure that anyone who has used Lustrecote can tell you, be sure to spay a test spot first to make sure it isn't going to "splatter" your plane.

Problem is it may start splattering after the can is 1/2 used  HB~>

I've used the stuff on all of my models since re-entering the hobby about eight years ago. All of the models I've posted on this forum are Lustrekote with various poly clearcoats to seal graphics. It's certainly not the best stuff, and I've known it all along. If you can get the knack of using it though, you can actually get some nice results. I have fallen victim to the dreaded "spatter", but it seems it's usually the nozzle just needing a quick flush with some thinner. The only reason I need it this time is I was using up some old "inventory" and I've already got a coat on a little Sig "Buster" I'm working on, but I ran out, Doh!
The biggest problem I've had with my process is when you need to perform a repair. You can go dope, Lustrekote, poly in that order, but that's it, no repairing with dope. It has been a good incentive to not crash though!
Finally, I am currently in the process of switching over to using and spraying dope now, The only thing I need is a good compressor and I'm ready to go. I should have just made the switch long ago. y1

Lustercoat being an enamel has one really irritating habit and that is that it cracks with age. My 5 year old Brodak Zero was done with Lusterkote and Monokote and the paint has developed a nice cracked egg pattern in the paint. It's time to strip the stuff and redo the plane anyhow but this is something to consider if you keep your planes for any length of time.
