« on: February 12, 2015, 06:40:38 PM »
Hey Guys and gals I posted a video of me flying my TF Score using my stooge.  Its powered with a ST 51 with a Zinger 12 x5 on 63' lines.

Ya-I like mine too but is still a bit of a challenge. As a lower end intermediate flyer the thing still feels "big" to me. Mine is easliy flown also on a St. 51 but on 65' lines with a Zinger 12/6 eliptical tip prop. Mine does seem to "fall" if you will on the bottom of out side manuevers though. Maybe lines to long?

I've never heard of a Score till now. I just looked it up. 60-70 ounces, and a great looking plane. That's the weight of my Sig Magnum, 71oz including nearly 20 years of cumulative glue and repairs. 60 or 66 inch span if I recall. It was given to me last spring at a contest. If I don't eat a heavy breakfast it'll try to fly me Lol.

If I was a big ol boy like you, Charles I might be able to work a little less to hang with it. I need to learn to lean my skinny 125 lbs back against it. I watched one of my videos and I'm letting it be the boss and leaning into it. I have flown some nice patterns with it on calm days, but it's pulled me off my spot on pullouts a few times on windy days. Not a good thing, but luckily it's still in one piece.
Have a good time with the Score, and post videos whenever you want. Thanks for the entertainment.

Hi Norm,

Last time the Carter cheerleaders cheered for you also and then you took first place.  I hope to have them flying at the Palmer this year and you and I can cheer for them.

Great video Charles!  And I'm jealous of that ST51 - you've got it dialed in nicely!  Hopefully we'll see ya Monday.

Thanks everyone for you nice response. I was a little nervous posting it.  I live in Escondido, CA 92025 and anyone is welcome to come join me.  The ST 51 has a couple of extra head shims on it I forgot to mention earlier. Since that flight I have muffler pressure to a 6 oz uniflow clunk tank and the engine run doesn't run away anymore. I also have put a CF prop on it and I like it so much more. I will be experimenting with different variables to push it for more and more performance.  The one unfortunate thing about the TF Score it takes a lot of nose weight to get it to fly to my liking.

Boy Charles you guys love to rub it in flying in shirt sleeves and the trees not moving all over the place.  You had me beat score wise until you went from the Hour glass to the over head.    It's 2 1/2 laps to the over head.   Yes I'm hard nosed and would have been telling you if I was there.  But, I'm stuck here in cold temps in the 20's with not wind or in the 60's with a gale blowing through.   Anyway I know you will tighten up the pattern and  put it to your competition. Hi Charles,

I can tell you like flying the Score and you are comfortable with it!  Both of those will help you with your pattern. y1  Keep on flying and trimming it, you'll get there!

Nice!  I see that you have flown alone before. You parked it right near the stooge line so you wouldn't have to drag the lines far.

Looks like nice weather there in Escondido.

The trees and field reminded me of a flying site I flew in once in California.

Did you "assemble" the ARC or get it elsewhere?  I ask because I had a friend down there that used to have a Score that looked like that. Alas, he doesn't fly anymore. Maybe it is getting a second life!

Charles;
Have you tried running an APC 12.25-3.75 prop yet? They are a common prop and it's about all I use on my ST.51s anymore. Gets the engine up on the power band and needle setting can be more fine tuned. I never had much luck with Zinger props on the ST.51 and especially 5 and 6 inch pitch. That much pitch tends to add a lot of load to the engine and is the source of the run away/lean run proble. You'l be at the 9500 to 10,000 RPM range at tale off. Make sure you are using at least 20% oil, maybe more with at least half of it castor. Hot glow plug rounds outthe set up. I have a Score with a Saito .56 in it and it is a nice flying machine. Not the most attractive airplane in my opinion but very functional. Watch the nose structure for any looseness. These airplanes were assembled with hot melt glue, and the nose can come apart unexpectedly. The whole nose came off mine in flight during a demonstration at Oshkosh a few years back. I was able to repair it, but added some structure to the nose and used epoxy for re-assembly. Only added about a half ounce of weight. The ST.51 has served me very well over the years in my Shark .45s and I have a second Score in the attic that may get set up for one , one of these days!
   Keep at it,

Hi Guys,
I am flying in Escondido CA at public soccer field with unofficial city permission but the park authorities know I fly there pretty regularly for the past two years,   And as Paul Walker noticed I do fly alone often and stop the plane short of or little beyond the stooge so I don't drag my lines all over the ground.  I have several APC 12.25 x 3.75 props and I will give them a try.  I purchased this "Score" shown in the video  already built a year ago from a friend.   Last year the TF Tutor 2, I competed with was in better trim then the "Score" was.  It was after the GSSC 2014 I turned my attention back to the TF "Score". Thanks for the heads up about the nose coming off of these ARF's  My friend did add some gussets to the front end and replaced lead outs and suspended mount a brodak bellcrank. By no means am I saying I have it all together guys so please I am looking for and need lots help to get better so keep comments and suggestion flowing. Thanks for all of your help in advance.

The Score is a good flying stunt ship, almost a shame Top Flight discontinued it. I put Tom Morris controls in the one I put together and powered it with a Saito 56. Flew the covering off the durn thing but it got me from the bottom of Advanced to near the top (reference placings at Brodak's). The main thing it taught me was not to be afraid of the wind. It had the power and because it was an ARF (somewhat expendable) I wasn't afraid if crashing it.

Have another one in the box I won in a raffle. If I ever get around to putting it together the only thing I would do different is strip the chinacoat covering and recover it with Monokote.
