I hate SANDING !!!!
« on: January 20, 2008, 12:43:49 PM »
Someone wanted the "popcorn" off our living room ceiling.
So this weekend guess who gets to remove the popcorn.
The pop corn came off easy enough with water and a wide scraper.

She was not ready for all the dust from sanding the joints in the sheet rock.

I look like a snow man from all the dust.

I hate sanding.

I hope this little home remodel project didn't involve 20 year old sheet rock spackle! We just ran into that at work, it was laced with asbestos and stopped the project until a asbestos abatement could be completed. After testing asbestos was found in the spackle, and in the adhesive to adhere a fabric covering to the walls. It was also found in the tile adhesive and the adhesive used to glue the carpet down over the tile. HB~> Be careful with that stuff.   D>K

So the house was built sometime around 1989 or 1990. The last asbestos laced joint compounds were pulled from the market in 1977. I would guess you are OK but a mask is always a good idea.

As Dick Fowler noted, asbestos hasn't been used in joint compound for over thirty years now.  Also, drywall board never did have asbestos as an ingredient to the best of my knowledge.  It's gypsum with a paper covering.

It's always a good idea to wear a dust mask but white buggers is usually the worst consequence you suffer for sanding drywall without one.

Paul,

I feel your pain! I recently finished putting up 12 sheets of sheet rock and thought to myself ''Well that wasn't that bad'' Then i realized I've got 6 more rooms to sheet rock and then taping and compound left! HB~> HB~> HB~>

Roots,

Sanding is a Zen thing. You have to get into the right frame of mind to sand.   ;D

Thanks guys,
I did use a dust mask. And it helped a lot. We just got finished in time for the Greenbay play off game last night.
The room sure looks different.
My right wrist is sore today, I think from the sanding. That is my flying hand too. HB~>

I need to go sand on my Cardinal, that would make it feel better. y1
