I've been thinking about building Dick Sarpolus' Challenger from the December 1987 Flying Models issue for a couple of years.  I'm still a beginner, but I thought that maybe I could try my hand at N-30 competition in the not too distant future.  Not a lot of entrants around here, so not a lot of pressure.  I read the article two or three times, and figure I could build a decent model if I take my time.  The article says that Dick wanted to get flying quickly, so he just got a SIG Super Chipmunk wing kit and built the model around that.  So, I figured I'd do the same and order the $25.99 wing kit from SIG and save myself time cutting everything out.  Probably be more uniform than my hand cut ribs, anyway.

So, the box from SIG arrived today and I was super excited.  I opened the box, and...  A bunch of wood and some rib sheets.  Hmmm... no plans or building instructions.  DOH!!!  Why I figured there'd be instructions in the wing kit is beyond me.  I guess the word "kit" just made me assume.  But, the Challenger plans and building article should work just fine.

Just thought Y'all would get a laugh out of my assumption.

  Hello Mark,
                   You can get the plans from Tom Dixon, unless someone here can get a set to you. Dixon is also putting out a short kit of the Challenger. I saw one of these fly many years ago w/an OS48 (4S). It really flew well. He took 1ST in PA stunt that day in some really high turbulent wind. I always said to my self "I got to build one of dose. Finally, someone started putting out a short kit (Dixon), so I've got mine ordered. He gets them done really fast.

Mark here is my two cents here.
Since you are a beginner in am thinking the least amount of headaches possible. The least headaches power plant wise is electric. The least amount of headaches win the model is get an ARF. I am thinking a Vector ARF that performs quite well with an electric motor in the nose and you are good to go.

Get the quick build kit from Tom Dixon no matter what you decide on for power.  Local flyer had a Challenger with a OS 40 Surpass (4-stroke) and it was a great combo.  This guy is an old-timer that flew with Gieseke back in the day. Said he let Bob fly it and he liked it..  That's all you need to know.  I ordered one from Dixon, will put Saito 40 on it..
