I know that when the French made the Rafale they made a land, and a sea based version. Did not know they could land on our ships. The French don't really have anything like our Super Carriers so their Rafales' have to be able to land on small ships. Supposedly, they can out turn and out manuever any sea based ship we have, including our Super Hornet.

I've read the same thing on the flight characteristics. Those canards really make it dance.

Did I see right?... were the canards working in the same direction as the elevators??

I didn't pick that up (I was having too much fun watching the show).

Moving the 'elevators' down would both increase lift (like flaps) and give a pitch-down moment (like elevators) -- moving elevators and canard together would let you modulate the lift without rotating the aircraft.

It must have some interesting control rules in there, someplace.

I really need to proof read my posts. The title should read: "I did NOT know they could do that" DOH!!!

They have multiple computers deciding which way each surface needs to be deflected to get the results that the pilot wants. I can think of some situations where the computers might elect to deflect the surfaces in the same direction.

The forward moving surfaces(canards) control the pitch angle.   The rear moving surfaces control the lift like flaps as well as act as ailerons.  Amazing how much force those forward surfaces produce.  You notice how the forward surface is all moving like a stabilator on a combat wing.

Chris, you might want to chat with Bob Hunt for some insight. He has designed and flown some canards.

Eddie Culver, who is a member but has not posted much, has apparently had reasonable success with his canards. He has posted some pics of his Forward Swept Wing and ... Staggered Wing ... designs. His profile has an email address, if you want to contact him.

I remember a canard called the ,"Blue Thing". It was a profile and powered by a Cox .049. It appeared in Jr. American Modeler I believe. Maybe plans for it are available from the AMA. Hope this helps.  H^^

Hi Chris
Hope you got my reply from your e-mail - I hadn't heard anything back so I will post it here.  Anyway you are welcome to the info I have gathered and results from my testing.
Thanks - Eddie
