The French don't really have anything like our Super Carriers so their Rafales' have to be able to land on small ships. Supposedly, they can out turn and out manuever any sea based ship we have, including our Super Hornet.

I didn't pick that up (I was having too much fun watching the show).

Moving the 'elevators' down would both increase lift (like flaps) and give a pitch-down moment (like elevators) -- moving elevators and canard together would let you modulate the lift without rotating the aircraft.

It must have some interesting control rules in there, someplace.

They have multiple computers deciding which way each surface needs to be deflected to get the results that the pilot wants. I can think of some situations where the computers might elect to deflect the surfaces in the same direction.

The rear moving surfaces control the lift like flaps as well as act as ailerons. Amazing how much force those forward surfaces produce. You notice how the forward surface is all moving like a stabilator on a combat wing.

Chris, you might want to chat with Bob Hunt for some insight. He has designed and flown some canards.
