I got out today and actually flew for the first time since I tore up my knees onJune 18th.  y1

With the brace, I had no problems being able to do anything at the field.  Knee is sore now, but I feel great!!!!  j1 j1

Yeah, I was pretty rusty............. #^

Hey don't over do it, I did that with my back, no surgery, but a lot of therapy. I didn't listen. Bet you had fun though.

Well it was a last minute thing, and I didn't really get a chance to call Tom.  He's 45 min to an hour away. :(

I'll get him out there real soon now that I know I can do it if I'm just careful and use common sense.  Oh, yeah...... that could be a problem!!  %^  j1  **)

Yep, Walter, I DID have FUN!!!!!!!  ;D

I have been following orders (pretty much) and going through PT.  The kneeling and getting up/down didn't *hurt* but it did get me a *little* sore.  #^

Doing the pattern had a very threaputic effect on the old body.  f~

Hi Bill, I am glad that you were able to get to the filed and to fly! Since my knee was totally replaced I am able to do everything which I once did and continue to be most grateful!

Now for the new news...I am going to have to have my right (my flying side) shoulder replaced! Going to to this in January 2007! Bummer! Phil Spillman

Hi Phil,

Hate to hear about the shoulder.  But, I'm sure that will be "perfect", also, after it's healed.  My knee replacement is *scheduled* for when I get full retirement in a little less than 3 years.

I have been with out the distal end of my right collar bone for over 35 years.  Shoulder separation gone bad.  Some mornings I cannot lift either arm over my shoulder height.  That I can deal with, and with the brace I can do the flying.  I feel pretty blessed right now.  #^

Good luck, and I hope to see you soon!

Glad your up and running
I was pitting at a contest for Byron Barker.
He kept turning his plane upside down to start the engine.
I told him " Byron , no need to do this; I can show you how to start this engine
with the engine upside down; and the plane on the ground;  No problem.
Byron said " you don,t understand. "
Said I  "what don,t I understand ?
Byron said "I can,t sit the plane on the ground , because I can,t get down on my  knees."
               I felt 100 years old. :o :( ~^

One thing that really helped was getting the proper fitting shoes.
At the team trials a couple of years ago I couldn't judge on Sun. because I
was flat on my back on the motel room floor trying to get to the shower.  I went to buy some new walking shoes at a local store call the Runners Den. They made me take my socks off, watched while I walked back and forth a number of times, tried on about 8 different pairs of shoes. I told them I preferred walking shoes, almost everyone in the store said NO! running shoes have better support. Along with the PT,
and the proper fitting shoes my back problems have almost gone away.

I suffered with a bad left knee for close to 20 years. The Dr. said arthritis, and some in my right knee, also. For some reason, I bought some joint fixin' stuff at the health food store, took it for a couple of weeks, and it was no longer a problem. And I quit taking it. And several months later, it still was fine. I went out and bought a new Toyota Tacoma pickup with a 6 speed manual gearbox. It's still fine.

I did have some foot problems after driving to Edmonton, Alberta, from the Seattle area. I did the drive in three days up, two on the way back. Maybe I should stop and jog around for a few minutes, every couple of hours? I'm not sure what caused that, but I was miserable. It has gotten better, of late, but still somewhat painful. Both feet, feel like bruised heels. Maybe sitting for too long...I stand most the day at work?

I have circulatory problems in my feet and ankles. Good thing I'm not diabetic...I'm hypoglycemic, like many in the USA. Too much insulin production, vs. not enough. Anyway, I've found out that I have some joint problems, but if I'm careful not to annoy them, it helps. If my back problems go away, my neck stops hurting, and the creek don't rise, I'll be good to go!  :! Steve

Hi Steve,

Watch the hypoglycemia.  It usually leads to Type II diabetes.  I was hypoglycemic for years as well as my Father.  We both developed adult onset diabetes.  The Doctor told me when I found out about the hypo, that it would probably lead to diabetes.  My Dad was told the same thing  The Doctors were right.

I are not a doctor by any means, but go back to taking the joint fixin
pills, according to my doc & my vet, can't hurt. My Airedale gets one
a day plus a fish oil tab. My doctor says that can't hurt and would probably help me also. I also get the heel problem about every 6-8 mos
haven't a clue, goes away in 3-4 days. Isn't life great? I trust my vet, because the Airedale doesn't limp anymore.

Hey there guys with joint problems - About twenty years ago, at the "young" age of 46 my special;ist told me I needed joint replacement on both of my thumbs, but said I was too young.  I agreed and began to wear a special brace on my right hand.  I was an industrial electrician and used my hands a LOT for hard work.  A fellow employee told me of something that helped his wife and I tried it.  Six weeks later I tossed the brace and haven't needed one since!  I now even play guitar for hours at a time and that is a definite hardship on the thumb on my left hand - no problem except for being weaker than before.
The "magic" help, I refuse to call it a cure because I have to use these pills, is to take three or four cod liver oil gelcaps before bed each night with osteo-biflex as an added help.  (Walmart.)
Guys, you won't believe the results!  (My older brother had quit his locksmith business 'til I told him about this, he's now back at it.)  It didn't work for one person I know, so it's no guarantee, but there's nothin' to lose by trying it!
And coach Bill, WAY TO GO!!   j1
Warmest regards,
Will Hinton

Thanks Guys!

I took the RD-1 out with a Leo 37 (34) that Scott Riese worked on.  I wasn't going to attempt this "comeback" with a "big plane".  **)

"How did I do?"  Well the maunuevers were recognizable, but not real good.  Only was able to get in three flights and the tank wasn't big enough to get a whole pattern in.

Nevertheless, I was really happy to get things going again.  y1
But, if things go bad and I would have to run or something, it just ain't happening.  I'll just be minus one plane.  n~

Hi Alan,

This thread was a YEAR AGO! LOL!!!  Buddy,

Anytime you want to fly, give me a call.  I just need the impetus from someone to set a time.  You just tell me when! ;D

Ty,

You beat me in OTS last time! LOL!!  It's *funny* strange.  A year later, no surgery, and I can do anything except play sports without the brace, it seems.  I will still use it at contests, for the safety factor, but I haven't used it for practice in quite a while.  I can kneel, start the engine, get up, etc., like before! (actually even better since the PT it seems!) All with only two (out of 5)ligaments left in the knee.  Hardest part of the PT was learning to balance on that foot again.  Replacement comes when the pain gets to be too much in there, which I don't foresee happening for a long time.  It's been over 30 years with no cartilage, and it no longer hurts.
