I cut a foam wing !!!! Pics
« on: July 08, 2008, 10:21:18 AM »
Well I think I could get better at this. I cut a foam wing for another Scrapper.

Came out OK. I got a little fast going out the TE and made it a little thicker. I think I can sand it down. The Spar slot is a little rough.
Now to try and core it out for the lead outs!

Way to go!  You'll get better with each one you cut and then you can really get adventurous.  As you make new jigs for the various cuts you'll suddenly realize that making those was as rewarding as actually cutting. I have really enjoyed cutting foam and use the same method for making my molded balsa fuselage bucks.  Nothing more rewarding than doing the whooooooooooole thing yourself.
Way to go. (Again.)

Great first attempt.  I find that sanding in the spar slots is easier and more accurate than trying to guide the wire around the spar cutout in the template.  I use a simple depth gage/fixture similar to the kind you use for sanding recesses for hinges.

Wynn,
The Pizzazz is on my short list fer sure. I had to start small. I am getting hollered at now because I have too many planes now. mw~ You can never have too many right? D>K

The Scrapper is small and I can keep it under wraps for awhile. n~

you only need ONE plane - it is the Pizzazz

you will see what I mean when you build and fly one - all your other planes you will give away..........but if you dont believe me.  n1

That looks better than my first try at cutting a foam wing.  As stated it takes practice as with anything.  If your going to plank the wing remember to put the cut outs back in before planking.  I usually plank or put balsa sheeting/strips on before coring.  Keeps us posted.  DOC Holliday

Well I got kind of got it cored. I guess this wing is too thin to core. It is a very small wing. A very thin air foil and I cut thru the top.   The bell crank is close to the back of the LE.  I should have cut the core on a angle from center of the bell crank area to the tip of the wing.
Trashed the wing. n~ Oh well I learned a lot. :!
I will get another one cut next week. D>K

I know of a fellow that showed up at the NATS flying in PA . He was using a K&B 35 green head
with wood screws to hold the engine in his VECO smoothie.(so the story was related to me ).
Later he won a Nats and worlds champ tittle:Guess he learned a lot too!   %^@

Rootbeard, we all weren't perfect when we tried something new.  It takes practice.  DOC Holliday

Paul,  looks good,  I found out that spar slots are a little easier if you use a Dremel/w router base and a straight edge and just rout them out.
