I'm recovering
« on: November 03, 2015, 06:02:50 PM »
For those against using muffler or shooters ear muffs,  think again.  Today the doctor did his thing on my right ear without cutting the outside surface skin.  It will be several days or weeks to see if what he did works.   The wife said it was those model engines I flew or ran on the bench.  He agreed with her.  I mentioned the years sitting beside an injection molding machine,  the corrugater plus printers and the years working in telephone central offices.  The new electronic switching machines were not any quieter than the cross bars offices.   Got home in time to watch Royals parade and the anesthetic is finally wearing off.

Now a note to Tom Niebuhr.  The Mets played a great game but I think they forgot the Royals record for come from behind games.   Also late innings with two outs and runners on base.     Now the season is over and I can get some thing done.   Got the Vagabond wings framed up.   Added extra ribs at wing tips for the struts.   Also cutting more parts for the B-25.

Doc, I feel your pain. Years of crewing on fuel drag cars, shooting and model airplane engines, speed and combat.  I now wear hearing aids. We didn't need no stinking ear protection.  Those were for wimps. lol
My good clean living done caught up with me.

Let us know if your hearing improves, John. I sure would like to stop the whistling in my ears. Maybe it's the wind currents? I hope all those without hearing damage will pay attention and get some good earplugs and USE THEM!   R%%%%  Steve

Huh? Whatdidyasay? Got hearing aids last spring, and they sure help. Still have the constant ringing, doctors says nothing you can do. Bought some high tech hearing protection for shooting, and wow! They muffle sounds above 85 db, and amplify those below. I can hear the shooter talking next to me, but gun shots are well muffled. Cool.

Doc, hope your hearing comes back well enough for you to hear your flight order called at the 2016 GSSC  #^

I have the ringing, also, wore aids for several years after retiring in 2000, but my hearing returned!  My doc is baffled.  But...the ringing still persists.  It gets worse if I run a router or go flying, but when I shoot, I wear earplugs AND muffs!  I shudder to think what my 38 special would do to the ringing if I shot without them!!!
So...if you work in a high noise environment, listen to us old guys and wear protection!!!  You'll be glad you did.

T read some have ringing in the ears.  If so get to an ear doctor soon.   Wae kind of told the hearing aids made it worse on the hearing loss.  The left ear is still working even though he did say the ear drum was collapsed.   I guess it must be working as I can now here and feel myself scratching the neck or cheek by the ear.   Couldn't before.  Yesterday while still groggy the wife asked me if I was going to answer my cell phone that was going off.  I finally could hear it later in the evening.

Now this last line is not to be religious, but while talking to the anethegist and my high blood pressure,  I admitted to him I didn't know why I was worried as I was supposed to put all my worries in GODs hands.   In recovery Ilooked at the nurse and asked if she was an angel or was I still here on earth.  She laughed at me.   Crazy old man I guess I am.

This is what I call LOUD.

Rush at the United Center in June.
My ears rang for 2 days. Note the stack of Marshall amps.

Before moving to Florida in 1972 I did Greatfull Dead and many others amp setups all over the Northeast US for McIntosh amps. Hundreds of college gigs.
I lived only 70 miles from the Woodstock gig. I help build the huge cabinets for the JBL drivers. Four JBL 15" bass drivers in each box +horns. Amps were Altec and Mac. I was there a week before the event and could not get out till it was over. We had trailers full of back up amps. I never used drugs and most people there did not even though the stories say different. I became a JBL wholesaler for many years after Woodstock.
I still play music at concert levels.

My ear doctor gave me a hearing test in a sound proof booth. He said I did not need it as I was a sound proof booth. His exact words were, "You can't hear worth a ZIP". Working around petroleum pipeline pumps for 27 years without hearing protection and riding motorcycles along with flying models has done some damage. No ringing in the ears though and I am thankfull for that. Maybe my hearing is so bad I cannot hear the ringing.

Hope yours goes well Doc.

Talking about ear doctors I have to tell the story about mine. When I had a fatal heart attack 4 years ago he was there to keep me alive for 15 minutes with CPR while waiting for the EMT to get there and start my heart again with the defibrilator. I tell him he is the best ENT and heart doctor in Salina Ks.
