I'm being displaced to Dallas!
« on: September 21, 2013, 11:33:13 AM »
Though i haven't been too active in C/L the last few years I am being displaced to Dallas and will commute there probably until I retire in 10 years, so am going to have a crash pad, little airport car, etc. I have three Pattern ships but will need a Stunter. I'll probably drive one out from California. All I'll needs is a FF model and I can fly with everyone.
Will be starting the displacement in December with the most junior guys and I'm in the middle, so spring 2014 it looks like, I'll looking for a room to rent that is in a nice neighborhood, easy drive to the airport, and flying fields. Any input is appreciated.

Dallas is blessed with a great control line club, and perhaps a dozen RC clubs. Lots of the guys in the club fly control line at the Great Southwest RC club in the mid-cities area. (Enough that the RC club put in a CL circle.)This is much closer to DFW Airport than the "official" club field, which is on the border of Dallas/Garland, plus you can fly RC there too.

Stunt is certainly well represented, but we also have NATS winners in speed, carrier, and racing, as well as F2D team members. We'd love to have you with us.

Hi Chris,
Good to see you this forum again,(I usually catch you at RC Universe). I remember you at Sepulveda. I am in Round Rock,(suburb of Austin). You will love the Dallas contests. Texans know how to do stunt contests right!! Great people, great food, great flying. Tom Farmer runs a bang-up operation as contest CD.

The only thing is, the heat is absolutely horrible!! Not being able to head to the ocean will mess with your head big time for quite a while but, you just have to get used to it. No Rodeo Drive, no Santa Monica, no Beverly Hills,no runs to San Diego,no trips to Santa Barbara,no running into movie stars at restaurants. But the BEST stunt contests held anywhere!!

Looking forward to seeing you in Dallas.  Here is a map....

1). Main flying field.  NW corner of NW Hwy (244 or Loop 12) and Garland Rd. (Hwy 78).
2). "Other" flying field.  Grass circle at the Greater Southwestern RC Club (www.flygsw.org).  Probably more flying here than at the main field.
3). Mike's Hobby Shop where we have our meetings - at least for the next 2 months.  Shop is moving due to hwy construction not long after
the new year - last I heard they haven't found a new place yet.

If it were me, I would prefer to live North of the airport rather than South...  Just SW of the "3" on the map is Valley Ranch (actually part of Irving), then going west there is Coppell, Grapevine, and Southlake.  All are good places to live, not cheap, but not ridiculous.  The "A" is Las Colinas, also part of Irving...very cool, but can be pricey.  Avoid having to take I-35 to work or I-635 east of I-35 - both will be under construction for the next few years.

Hope this helps!!

After all this time??/ Was it something I said????? That's a long way to go to trouble shoot the Escort!! It out to last you another ten years though! Sean is getting ready to make another trip to Afghanistan, but will still be based out of Fort Hood down in Killeen, so you may run into him once he gets back.
This reminds me I owe Michael a birthday card.
    Type at you later,

Chris,

Please don't feel "displaced".

Long time no see.  You will love the Texas people, and one of the most active CL clubs in the country.

Welcome!

Chris,
My sister-in-law lives in Grapevine. That is at the North edge of DFW. It is a nice town. I hope this goes well for you.

Hello Chris,

It will be great to have you in the Dallas area.  We can always use another modeler.  Plus you can frequent one of if not the best hobby shop, MIKE's in Carrollton!

If you plan to fly at hobby park in Dallas be warned around dusk the birds will have none of it.  They hoover overhead like a school of sharks and dive bomb your model with reckless abandon!  The club keeps the circle in tip top shape.

Looking forward to some flying.

Sorry to hear that Chris. Always like seeing you at the Basin. Don't quit writing about your flying experiences either. The good news is you are landing at a center of C/L activity. Gonna be good!  8)

Thanks for the warm welcome and I'll look up every lead and person here when the day comes. I now have an idea of where to look. The when is going to be up to the company.
To start I'll be commuting so I'll be a part timer, I still be around SoCal because I don't think I can get Laura to relocate.
Thanks again, guys.

Hey Chris,  my sister-in-law lives in Arlington TX which is almost 1/2 way between Dallas and Ft Worth.   According to a friend I know he states there is more stunt flying in Ft Worth.   With the highway system of the area it is not that far time wise.

As for the FF piece, what exactly are you looking to get into? Discus HLGs are allot of fun!

The Texas Cloud Climbers are a really cool group.  Got to go to their September contest last year (was at Rucker for the past 2 months so couldn't make it this year. ). They have a good site out in Haslet.  Let me know when you get in and I'll shoot you a few contacts.
