I'm a thief!
« on: March 25, 2006, 01:32:48 AM »
???  :o ;D ;D ;D ;D
It's true, I steal things all the time!!!!!
I steal every good idea and bit of knowledge that I can about these airplanes we build and, in my case, love so much.
I don't have the aeronautical knowledge that many in this hobby/sport possess, so i have to resort to being a good thief!  Over the past 40 plus years of this endeavor, I have stolen enough information that I would never live long enough to serve out my jail terms!
Ain't it great that the "ones in the know" are so generous with their knowledge?  I think I will just keep on "Stealing" what they give us.  ;D

As my Daddy used to tell me, "It aint stealing, you are just borrowing and don't plan on returning it".   I too have borrowed from others designs and experiences.  DOC Holliday

Hi Ron,
I try to pass on any and all things that I "steal"!  ;)
What I really like is the fact that World Champions, NATS Champions, all sorts of great, knowledgeable flyers will freely share with even some "stunt low life" like me!
Right here we have Ted Fancher and Randy Smith as Forum Moderators.  Can't get much better than that!
Plus there are so many others who are members here with like credentials.
I have talked in oerson with all the US World Champions on several occasions.  These guys really do care about spreading the wealth and improving the event.

Here are some observations on idea stealing that are sure to obscure the issue.

Back in 1986 I took a plane to the Nats that I had named Stunt-Fu. The plane was a jet style thing with side scoops and painted in red, black and gold. HP-40 for power. The most radical thing I did with it was -I turned the vertical fin around. A few years later Windy did the Cardinal with exactly the same reversed vertical fin. Dee Rice did the same thing with the Oriental. I know for sure I built Stunt-Fu before the Cardinal was born , but I'm not sure when Dee did the Oriental. If the Oriental came out after 1986 then both those guys "stole" my rudder. If Dee did the Oriental prior to 1986 I stole the rudder from him. None of which matters much.

In any pursuit wherein there are a lot of people thinking and designing the same thing (in this case stunters) the likely hood of two or more guys coming up with the same idea independantly from one another is very high. The parameters of design are very narrow.  So it follows that at some point a guy on one side of the world will have the same idea as a guy on the other side of the world. Even though it is the same idea neither guy stole it Their thought processes simply reached the same crossroad at the same time.

I did a ten year stint making custom pocket knives and I had a similar event like the rudder occur.
I took a piece of stag horn and cut it in halves length wise to create a small slip joint folder with a clip blade. They were a pain in the neck to build so I only made about a dozen. I was proud of my radical new design. One day I came across a fellow that was selling factory knives at a knife show and lo and behold he had a stag horn handled folder in it's original factory packaging that looked just like mine. Only not as nice., He said he'd had it for about six years. That would mean that whoever designed it did it a long time before I ever got the idea to build my model. Did I steal the idea? NO! Hell I'd never even seen one before.
The upshot of this story is that it is possible for likeminded people thinking about the same thing to come up with the same idea.

I've got to pack up for a flying session now with Jan and Dave. The weather man says the wind will blow around 15 mph. Should be fun.

Frank,

I don't remember the exact year for the first Oriental, but since it is a Plane that's legal (and popular) for Classic, I'm fairly certain that the Oriental's existence can be documented prior to 1969.  Make certain that you send the royalty check for that rudder directly to Mr. Rice.

Hi Paul,
I have always heard that Dee built his first Oriental in 1955.  So, it's now 51 years old!  He isn't a member of this forum (which remids me, I gotta contact him!) but he's in the PAMPA Directory last time I checked.
