Hurricane to hit Texas coast
« on: August 24, 2017, 06:42:04 PM »
It looks bad for the Texas coast.  I hope our friends down there have taken the necessary precautions.  Damage from flooding, isolated tornadoes, etc. will be considerable.

I know this is trivial compared to the widespread damage to homes, businesses, etc. but the team trials site is likely to be flooded.

I hope the dreadnought battleship USS Texas weathers the storm ok too.  Texas isn't very seaworthy these days.

My wifes Grandfather served on the Texas in 1930. He was 17 when he joined. She took him to a reunion on the ship on 2003. He was 90 and still not the oldest one there.

I think the USS Texas is a floating museum, docked near Houston.  At least that is the last I heard.  There have been projects to keep it afloat as it was, as mentioned, in terrible shape.

Those who live hundreds of miles from this storm will also be affected.  The refineries may be out of action for a while.  I expect to see fuel shortages and higher prices.

Its in LaPorte TX, just east of Houston and she's not doing well these days. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/06/12/battleship-texas-closed-after-sprouting-new-leak.html

Most of the high winds have been to the south of Houston.  We lost a tree and some branches.  The rain is forecast to last for several days.

Regarding Scobee Field, it all depends on how much water falls into the watershed for the reservoir.  So far the field is wet but not near under water.  That could change though.  Don't fret, we'll be ready for the team trials.

The Rockport TX area and CorpusChristi area took the highest winds.  This was a good looking storm, a tight eye very defined with beautiful yellow, orange and red spiral rainbands.  I just hate it when the storm is all blotchy with no defined center of rotation.  Disgraceful.  :)

re: the USS Texas, they towed it to Galveston several years ago for repairs.  It sits near the Houston ship channel by the San Jacinto monument.  Mostly I think is sits on the bottom.  Not in the best of repair, but a beautiful old ship with quite a history.
