Title: Huntersville, North Carolina, October 18th, 19th & 20th, 2013
Post by: Cliff Henke on September 30, 2013, 12:56:33 PM
Hey gang, I have not heard much concerning the Huntersville, North Carolina, October 19 & 20th C/L Contest. Reason I'm asking is I have never been to a C/L contest and have heard for many years Huntersville is a great place to go fly or spectate. I want to bring my wife also.

Can anyone give me a clue of what to expect to see ( classes ? ) I know there will be great flying.  Any vendors, food, admission fee, etc. How long do the days of activity last ?

Is there a time schedule for each day ?  Sorry for all the questions, really.

Any info. would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance,
Cliff Henke

Cliff,

The schedule for Huntersville contest is the following,

Field open for practice on Friday , we have a judges seminar of friday at 4:30, alot of people fly all day, if you want to come earlier in the week,, make sure you contact someone to have the gate is unlocked, we have access to the field daylight to dark, but keep the gate locked when no one is there

Saturday 10 am, OTS, N30, Profile, Basic Flight at noon
Speed limit combat, 1/2 a combat , Navy Carrier ( 15, profile  and a couple other carrier classes, )

Sunday, PAMPA Stunt Classes ( Beg, Int,Adv, Expert) start at 9 am

We have alot going on on Saturday, pretty much daylight to dark flying, competing and practice for Sunday,

We have two paved circles, one very nice grass circle used for OTS and Beginner, and 2 end of rc runway circles, take off on asphalt, land on grass, a combat  circle in the grass , carrier is on grass, with wood carrier deck, that will be 6 circles going on at one time on Saturday,

We have a nice big shelter for spectators, vendors and contestants, with picnic tables, we have 2 porta johns, one for men, and one for the ladies,

You can drive up to shelter to unload models, but park in parking lot, just a couple hundred feet walk, combat and carrier are  closer to parking lot, handicap parking available

We will have sandwich, desert , chips  type   concessions, drinks available on site for lunch break, price is right too,

We usually get done on Sunday before 1pm,we run only one class per circle  for stunt on sunday, to speed things up and get people home as fast as possible

Alot to do locally for the wife , hotels and restaurants, shopping centers ,  NASCAR race shops  are just a couple miles from the field, bring a chair and a cooler and camera   and enjoy the great fall NC weather

Hope to see you in a few weeks

Will and Ed, will one of the grass circles be available for practice on Saturday? I'm not sure if I can get there before dark on Friday.
Thanks for the information, I printed it so I can answer all of my wife's questions.

Rusty,

The upper grass circle will be open as soon as OTS is done, the end of runway circle will be open as soon as profile is finished, plenty of places to fly off of grass,

Yes it is at the Ramada, The fish camp (seafood restaurant ) is across the street in the shopping center. Book your room early at the Ramada, it is filling up quick, reasonable price on room too.

Tell them you are with the contest group, I got my room for $59
That's what I told her but I got a different price, still discounted as a government employee rate. $60something bucks. Not bad anyway.

Kent Tysor will there to judge Sunday, he is going to try to be at field on Saturday. "

When you  call the the hotel, mention Metrolina Control Line Society for discounted rate, even if you have already booked a room, call them back, and  tell them about the discount rate.

Finally got that ornery Thunder Tiger dialed in on my Shoestring. That thing has been eating up all of my practice time. 9x4 prop, home made .025" head shim(in addition to the .015" stock one), 10% nitro(rather than 15%) and it finally flies less than a zillion MPH. I was able to repeat the beginner pattern back to back today, my first time for a repeat and third time for the full thing with no aborts.
Stuntersville, here I come!!! :D #^

Very busy day at the field today, only official flights were 1/2 a combat, good turnout for it and a good show for spectators,

Carrier was not run today but several people getting ready for carrier tomorrow,

Most normal attendees were here early , burning fuel, probably most flights for today would be a toss up between Steve Fitton and Dan Banjok,

OTS, Classic and Profile tomorrow,

All circles were busy pretty much all day, we left the field around 7 pm, diehards were still at it , while others had made their way to outback or the Local Italian resturant,

bad news today, the local fish camp was closed ,  no gizzards for Watt Moore tonight.

Too many names to give a list of who attended, to many new planes, too many new flyers, we will try to get a posting of results tomorrow, good turnout, looks like usual great fall Nc weather,

I dropped by on the way to the Ramada, about 5:00. Talked to a bunch of people I only know from the forums. Ken and Shawn Cook, Mike Londke, Ray Copeland, among others. Watched a few patterns and some combat messin' around...a cool mid air collision. Lots of fun for the short time I was there. Heading to the pool now to see if any more fun is happening.

That's a great shot!

Steve is taking the "heart attack" stance.  Caption..."Oh My God! Is my plane going to make it through its 7000th flight!?!?!?!?!?!"

Steve is usually the one getting the great inflight and candid shots around the contest.  It's good to see the photographer being photographed!

Nice timing on that shot Derek.

I thought Steve was just taking the pledge after the long night by the pool...  010!

Kidding aside, when someone figures out something better to do with your other arm that won't throw me off balance or look even goofier when trying to fly, please let me know!

We gave poor Adrian enough grief at the Nats one year over his patended "how much is it gonna cost" gesture... you should have seen the look on his face when he landed, looked up and saw me with a line of his fellow friends from Miami, wives and all lined up along the edge of circle 2, waving our left hands in unison doing the "how much is it gonna cost" gesture. He had some interesting things to say, but my Cuban was a little rusty. Most of could be roughly translated as "What the...!!! You guys are cruel!!" followed by a few things the forum software probably won't allow. The look of betrayal when he saw his own wife in the lineup was PRICELESS. Ahh memories...

I used to have my left hand just hang down beside me and on calm days I would use it to help me find the winds.

As of late, past few years, I have noticed I move around alot when I fly so I use it for balance. It is a built counter balance so use it.  But then again I am just a skinny runt and need all the help I can get.

If the pledge of allegence to the PA is working for you then by all means dont change a thing!  I am just having fun!!   ;D ;D ;D

I put my arm up there because I ripped off the stance from Kent Tysor.  That, and Derek said there were high levels of gayness with my left hand waving around when I was flying.

That's a great pic Derek! I thought I kept seeing the camera flash going off when I was flying there...

Im not sure who designed it but I know Dan said it was probably 20 years old or more and it was 96 inch wingspan. It had 2 Enya 35s on it. Sorry thats all I know about it.
