Field repairs are done at the Huntersville Flying Site , Looks great , R/C Runway is all new , We are looking forward to a good turnout , Don't forget about the Judges Clinic on Friday Evening at: 4 PM . Then we go eat Seafood at the Local Seafood Restuarant in Huntersville . Don't eat too much and get a good nights rest , be ready for a busy weekend of the best Control Line Competition in the Area .

Hi Chad,

I had emailed Howard Shenton last week and asked when we would be able to get in and look/work on the Combat Field. I have not gotten a reply either but I will call Howard tonight after 9:00 and see what he has to say. The last time I talked to Howard he indicated that NO work had been done on the Combat Field and he didn't know if any would be done.

With the exception of Howard, I don't think Combat Guys rate very high with the rest of the Huntersville club. That's OK, we will just have to look out for ourselves. I will try to get up with Howard either this weekend or next and schedule a work/fly day at the field to see if there is any hope. Without some work, I agree with you that the field is not really suited to combat. You tear up more on the field that you do in the air.

I guess I will try to schedule two contest a year in Winston Salem at Hobby Park for Combat in the future. I don't know if its too late to get one in this year, but I will look into it.

I hope you can make it to Huntersville in May but undersatand why you may not come. I will call you as soon as I have seen the field for myself.

If Roger Wildman gets back from Arizona in time, we'll be their. If not I might just come by myself. I enjoyed myself the last time I was there, great contest. We'll see.

The combat field is a little better than last year, better ground cover and less rocks , at least less to see.. grass is slow to grow on that site. Howard is the contact person for Combat , he can fill you in on any details.feel free to contact him with your concerns .

I went to the field last week and shot some pictures, They have a barrier about where the R/C runway use to be, so the combat area has little change , the r/c runway has been redone and grass has been planted around it, The Barrier stops people from damaging the r/c Runway grass and area that is planted

. We have had alot of work going on at the Huntersville site over the past 6 months , More good things to come in the future . We are not far from being the premier control line facility on the east coast ..I can't think of any other county funded facility like this ...

With all of the flying sites being lost we are blessed with a Parks dept that wants to address our needs and concerns . many clubs would like to swap places with us , i am sure .

Below is a picture of the combat site and a picture of the north end of the r/c runway. There will be alot of room for combat in that area after the grass gets established, no time soon ....

I was at the field on the 25th and it looked about the same as Will's pictures. We have been getting quite a bit of slow thin rain at my place every few days so there is a good chance that the grass may grow. I have asked the person in-charge of parks to reseed but they have not done it. I have sent them a detailed report on the field three times in the last six weeks but I have no answer from them on reseeding. Much of the seed gets washed away and they need to reseed those spots. I am on the parks committee for the field but I have almost no feedback. Some of the RC people approached me with some issues about the RC field support areas and I sent those comments on to the parks person with a copy of what the AMA requires for a safe field but have no answer back. I think the place to use for combat in the future will be as Will said at the north end of the RC runway not where it has been set up before. There is no longer a place to fly models with a landing gear at the north end of the RC runway.

I made a reservation at the Red Rum, errr Red Roof in. First time I've stayed there, I'll see how it is. Its cheaper than the Holiday Inn for starters. Maybe Friday will have good weather for a change and we can fly all day. If the weather is bad I guess we can sit under the hootch and rag on people all day...!

I have stayed at that Red Roof , Think you will be happy, as with all relatively new motels , it is pretty nice . It hasn't the chance for alot of stunt flyers to trash it . Are you coming in on Friday ?

Hi Wayne, Will and Ed,

Thank you for the update on the condition of the combat field. I appreciate all the work that you have had done at the club flying site; it has got to be one of the nicest CL places in the country. While watching the events at last October's contest, I was reminded of the large CL contests I attended in Tulsa and Detroit while growing up in the 60s and 70s. I'm sure that when work on the combat field is complete it'll be just as nice as the site in Winston Salem, where the combat event was flown a couple years ago. I know that the area has been thru a dry spell for some time and that it seems the Park Folks have been slow in their efforts. Please keep up the good work.

Chad,

With the changes to the layout around the R/C runway, you may have a better combat site , after all of the grooming and grass growing is completed , than you had at last years site.

The end of the runway ground layout is alot flatter and bigger than before , we just need some good grass growing weather and we will have the perfect site for all events .

I usually fly a lot on Friday but this year I am having some eye work on Friday so I won't be there. Maybe I will fly on Sunday if I can get the 35 size Tempest done.

Friday's are usually more fun than the whole weekend , we are having a judging clinic Friday evening , open to anyone that wants to get the Judges perspective of what we do.Then we will go off to the local Fish Camp ( Seafood Restuarant to Non Locals ) for more fun and festivities .. Conbat Flyers
Please excuse the delay in responding to your questions but some things had to be worked out with the Parks Dept.

We will be having combat in the same general area as last fall. I have requested that the area be de-rocked again. The Sheriff's dept. did this last two years ago and it helped. Need it again. We may have to do some of it ourselves though.

If you are planning on coming to fly combat let me know.

We could also use help with judging and timing.

Below is a picture of the Combat Area as viewed from the Parking Lot and entrance driveway. Good site for combat , with improvements going on all the time , if it was a little better landscaped it would be usable for Stunt . With Mr. Howards Permission first ...

What a Flying site, numerous flying circles, paved and grass, combat circles , pit areas , etc..

Don't forget about the American Junior flyoff for the Frank Macy perpetual award . This is a free event , that happens after the competition is over for Stunt on Sat, usually around 4 pm Sat . No entry fee, just bring your AJ404 or Purchase on of the few remaining 404 gliders from james Duckworth , sign up and join in on the fun . Elimination rounds , keeps it fun. gets your name on the Trophy and you gring the trophy back next contest
