Huntersville contest ?
« on: April 06, 2010, 07:11:46 PM »
Hello All, I wanted to throw out a line to see who might be attending the Huntersville contest. I flew my first ever contest down in NC last fall. We drove all the way from Pennsylvania, but the awesome folks that put on the contest and the great people that show up make it well worth the 8hr drive. Hope to see some of the forum folks there in person. Best Wishes!!   ;D    Scott

Scott --

You're in Intermediate this time, I assume? We have a couple of local guys who are moving up to Intermediate from Beginner for Huntersville. Artie Jessup and Jimmy Welch moved up to Advanced at the KOI -- so you've lost some competition, and gained some!

Looking forward to seeing you there!

I was checking motels for Huntersville and I thought maybe I could find something cheaper for you guys and the best I came up with is Super 8 on Sunset rd. It is no more than 15 -20 minutes from the field and very easy to get to. It is in a safe location and close to Interstate 77. It is just inside Charlotte Here is a link to there site that is showing $39.95 a night. #^

Motel  Information From Doug Taffinder

I got a reservation at the Quality Inn in Huntersville for $59.00/night + tax.  They honor AAA, AARP and Choice Priviledges.  I believe they still also have Mature Travelers rooms, with discounts for the over 60 crowd, also.

The lady on the desk during daytime knows about the controline contests from our stay there last year. The rates are higher during NASCAR weekends, naturally.  Use exit 25 on I-77, coming from Charlotte area, turn left at first light past the return to I-77 and go about 500 feet to first street on your left . Turn left on this street and you're headed right at th motel.  Coming from the north, you take same exit 25 and go left across over the I. I believe there are lights at both ends of the bridge over the "I" before you get to the light you you turn left at.  There's an I-Hop a short walk away and more stuff up by the exit ramps and nearby US 22 just to the east of this.

Hope this helps out. A dollar saved is a dollar for the hobby.

Sincerely,

Doug Taffinder

Hello All, I wanted to throw out a line to see who might be attending the Huntersville contest.  . . .
. . . Hope to see some of the forum folks there in person. Best Wishes!!   ;D    Scott

The 2009 Brodak contest convinced me (and many others) that name tags are a great help not only to the newer contestants, but to us older folks with less than perfect memory chips.  For those who don't know "all the regulars" yet (or can get them mixed up), a discrete peek at a name tag can save an awkward moment at times (Like when I addressed Phil Spillman as Bill last year)  :-[ . As Scott mentioned, some folks you may know by name from the forums, but you might know what they look like.

Wearing your name tag is a courtesy to all the other flyers and officials. We will try to have as many pre-printed tags available as possible. So, if you are even considering coming to Huntersville, either note here (if you haven't done so already) or send an e-mail to me (e-mail address is in my profile). We have the whole "Norfolk gang" on the list already, I think.

Since I haven't had a flight in over a year, going on two, can I drop down to Intermediate?  I don't know if I can remember the pattern...........

Thanks, Ed!  Things just haven't worked out for me to get anywhere to fly, and as you know, I can't really fly around here alone.  Just too dangerous.  If I get to fly in the meet, I will still probably enter Advanced and lose a few teeth....  Figure I will only bring one plane, anyway. ;D

It was a great day at the Huntersville field today. It started out at 40 degrees this morning but it was up to 65-70 by 11 AM. The weather looks good with a maybe a chance of rain by Sunday afternoon. High around 80 degrees each day.No high winds this time.

A long standing tradition at Huntersville is the AJ 404 Flyoff. Second pic from the bottom is Sam Bolton (Scott's Dad, red shirt) who "walked away with the Walker Tropy" (Watt Moore next to him).

Fifth pic from the bottom are AJ 404 contestants Sam Bolton, Shelley Gordon, and Watt Moore.

So Sam, not Scott, got the first Bolton Trophy at Huntersville!

For those of you who expressed concern about the little salamander swimming around in the men’s Porta-John, I checked on him this morning between practice flights.  ;)

Good news! Whatever you all were feeding him over the weekend kept him alive, alert, and quite perky considering where he chooses to live. This morning, he showed no desire to get out, and was resting happily on rather solid floating “island”   <=

Nothing but lies.

Huntersville has bad weather and mosquitos.  The little ones grab you and take you home to the big ones.  Who berate you verbally before draining your corpulces and then giving you some disease that even South Americans are terrified of.  I pulled one out and used a borrrowed ST needle valve to regulate the blood flow.  The other folks are friendly like that.  You should go fly a Skeeter rubber band powered unit (if they still make 'em) and hope it does a loop before getting lodged in a tree.  Stunt.

Often, you have to pack a light jacket for both the May and the October contests.  If they held 'em in December and August, you'd know what to do.  Avoid the place because it are hotter than heck, or too cold to stand there and freeze yer ass off.  But, no.  You just never know.

I find staying up all night playing canasta at my old friend's joint south of Huntersville makes me fresh and competitive for the day's events.  I can out shout the maggots at the Waffle House in the morning - and that's saying something.  And they're no older than me.  We used to cheat together in high school together.  Just a few years ago.  Really.  And don't count on the wind.  It can be good and bad.  Don't count on it to take your flatuance down wind while discussing propeller balancing over coffee.  And understand that it is hard to judge a 3.9 second lap when you have to turn the wick up.  Like watching a VooDoo doing a 500 point pattern.

Be aware that that first flight in the AM has you trying to ignore this giant hydrogen ball out east that just flat annoys you every five seconds or so.  It makes the asparagus grow, and may even have something to do with creating livermush.  Is there anyone that would take credit for making livermush?  I think not.  But it are there, right in your face, on one of the best flying circles on the planet.  Mr. Sun.

And 8 hours?  You simply don't drive fast enough.  I'm limited by the cruise control not working over 85MPH, myself.  A safety feature, perhaps.  But that hasn't slowed me down since I discovered bricks.  One doesn't have to buy a Toyota to experience a stuck throttle.

You maggots have a wonderful time - at one of the coolest contests there is.  I'll be thinking of you.  In lewd ways.

Clayton - forever busy committing random acts of coolness

Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed? ~^  When I go to contests out of town I pack for anything.   It SIG contest one year I was wearing my overcoat and this was in June.  Lincoln NATS one year everybody was looking for coats, jackets and long johns because it was cold in July.  That is what I love about this big ole USA,  butby the time you get to where the weather is nice it changes like Stuart FL when the locals were freezing their arse off. Darn, Phil.  And just when I was about to say how much I wanted to see you at a CL field.  I very much appreciated the folks in the ol' FARM club.  Yerself included.  Phil helped me with a buddy box when I was struggling to master RC.  I ended up with a Futaba 6 channel transmitter that was altered to be a single stick by Ed Gerber.  Blanked off the left stick and incorporated a bottle cap on a spring loaded twisting right stick for rudder and a slide on top for the throttle.  Worked great until an internal wire failed from fatigue, and the ol' Saito 80 went to full throttle as I was taxiing towards the pits.  Exciting.  Still have my radio stuff.  Perhaps one day...

I did actually put that ST 46 to use, btw.  But I broke it in Norfolk at a contest.  97.  Ask Steve Fitton.  Split the exhaust stack where the screw attaches the back of the muffler.  Gave it to someone who was going to fix it, and haven't seen it since.  Got a never run late production model I'm running now, and still struggling with prop and fuel combination.  Or maybe I'm just not holding my mouth right.  But I did appreciate it - thanks again.

And yes, Huntersville has to be one of the coolest events I've known.  Unless you count the time I was kicked out of the Good Guys (a ti##ty bar in downtown DC) for trying to milk a dollar for everything it was worth.  That was an event.  Had my hip replaced the very next day.  I'm not kidding.

I'm in the process of relocating and changing jobs (Friday was my last day), and so flying has been rare as hen's teeth.  Have an SE5 lookalike that was built around the plans of a 38 Special that flies pretty good.  OS 46LA on it.  And the aforementioned ST46 powered machine that was built around an RSM P40 kit.  I think this is my last inverted side exhaust airplane.  There has got to be a more pleasurable activity than wiping off a full ounce of slimy goo from one's aeroplane after a mere eight minutes of flight time.

But, I'll be there in spirit.  Sneaking around tweaking needle valves while folks are distracted and adjusting posted scores with my own special magic marker.

I think I'll be dropping in during the Brodak contest in June, as it'll be just up the road from my new abode.  But, I probably won't fly much.  They make me fly Expert now, and as I said - I haven't even mastered the handling of a dollar bill at a bar.  I'd offer to fly clown racing for anyone if anyone needs a pilot.  My sneakers have spurs, and I think that is an advantage for anyone I team up with.  And my flight box always has a box of bandaids available.  For a price.

You folks have a nice contest.  And if the cops come around looking for me again, don't lie.  I'm simply not there.

Pete Rawlings.  What a nice guy.  Been a few years.  Moved to Williamsburg, if I recall.  Another one of those that was just a genuine nice guy.  A Colonel, I think.  Told me don't call between midnight and four.  He'd be sleeping.  The rest of the time, he had things to do.  Life is short.

I tell ya...  Hard to find any real maggots in the ol' model airplane world.  Ercil Arbogast stopped and watched me finish out a pattern in the front yard a few years back out front.  Had a nice talk.  He said he used to work on my property twenty or thirty years earlier when it was still a farm.  And he was a kid.  Had last been flying at a float fly out by Warrenton, I think.  Wayne Armstrong is buried about a half mile down the road as I type this.  He switched the crystal in his receiver and let me fly some sort of fun fly unit that we chased a hawk with for a couple of flights.  What a nice guy.  Laughed as I was CA glued to the leading edge of a plane in my shop by my little finger.  Ha ha ha - you're screwed now, eh?  Lit a cigar and just stood there.  It is only funny because my good arm is paralyzed and I was genuinely stuck to a wing that was clamped to my bench.  Couldn't do squat.  It got old after a few minutes.  He went to pee, I think.  Taught me how to apply plastic film, he did.  And apply CA sparingly.  Little finger glued to leading edge notwithstanding.  Likewise, kicker.  A pointed stick of 1/8 spruce to dip into a bottle.  Retired and frugal, he was.

I think it was a guy named Bill White that called and told me he'd died the night before.  I think I'll go visit him this next week.  I remember it was cold at his funeral.
