The Huntersville contest is one week away. The weather here has been fantastic for the last three weeks,77-82 degrees no wind. I only got out one day but it was beautiful. A cold front is going through today till Sunday the 17th and then it is going to warm back up and be nice weather according to the weather man. The reason I am leaving this note is our field is now a locked entry field. It is locked all the time except when a member who has a key is there. At our spring contest Larry was there early to unlock the gate and he stayed until someone who also had a key showed up so he could leave. If anyone wants to fly this week the RC guys will more than likely be around until at least Wednesday. They tend to not get there very early. If you are going to be at the field this week let me know and I will be there to unlock it. I don't live close like Larry did but I can be there buy 8:30AM.

You don't need to email me just leave a note here and I will get it.

I'll be down there Friday between 9:00 and 12:00, depending on the weather (ie if it sucks I won't try to get there early), but, don't worry about getting there early to get the gate. I'm sure somebody will show up.

What time does the field get locked down in the evening?

On Friday I will be there around 7:30 AM , .. On the locking of the gate, Most club members R/C and Control line have a Key to the park, we monitor the gate, Last one out locks the gate.. Not going to be a problem on contest days, just more of an issue whe people show up thru the middle of the week..

Didn't realize there was a vandal problem. Was just being cynical about the nanny state. Ah, but I was/am not wrong. Just got carded for a six pack of Bass ale. I'm fifty, I says. Well, it's my job or your six bottles of beer. What BS.

Another time/issue, I suppose.

No kidding, though. The cops did show up there one Friday while I was flying. I said yes, that's who I am. But, I paid for that gas!

Turns out the spousal unit had really really really been trying to get me on the phone. Got thru to the local cops who were between donuts and couldn't believe folks were still flying airplanes on strings.

I hope to make Huntersville a reasonably regular event again. Just a well-run event at a great site and an old freind to stay up all nite with playing (and winning) canasta. What's not to like? Besides livermush. Egads. You could make it worse with a topping of chocolate and anchovies, perhaps.

For any of you folks that are within distance and have not done much contesting - this is the place. Not that I haven't enjoyed every contest I've ever been to - but it is certainly a cool one.

You say it is less than 20 and it is a lugged frame.

Is it an an early carbon Trek?

Or is this a steel frame?

Are you a bike person?

Think about it. Who did Huffy sponsor in 1987-88. It is True Temper tubing, lighter than Tange #1 or any 531. A lot of these team bikes broke as the tubing was to thin.These bikes were used in the TDF in 1987. It was all Dura Ace 7 speed SIS

Hint It has the riders initials on the bottom bracket DL He was on a US team but was from Norway

I have another 1987 team bike but this one is to easy.

Get on that thing and set out for the Golden State Stunt Championships. Bring a light plane, because there are some mountains to get over. You'll be back in time for Halloween.

It's a 7-11 team bike made by Serotta for Huffy.

You are correct. It is lighter than my aluminum 80's Cannonade's and 2001Trek. How did you know?

I don't believe I will be making the trip this year,well never. Super long trips on a bike are not all that difficult but finding a place to stay at night for free is the big problem.
I did one day of the across Carolina as it runs right by my subdivision. Went 70+ miles and I got a car ride back home.I rode the 7/11 bike

At least we'll be having our own club contest Nov 7th... that's be the first and only contest I've seen since the Nat's...then KOI will be next.

Only getting to 3 Contests a year sux, even if one of them does happen to be the Nats.

Seems like I will be there late Friday night. Only going to fly an event on Sunday, going to use Saturday to practice! Two years off from flying will take quite a while to knock off the dust. And it won't be done in one day.

Wednesday morning 10AM and it is raining here. It will be all gone by this afternoon and good clear weather until next week. Expect mid 70's Saturday, 78-80 on Sunday

The Profile Class will be on the end of R/C runway, 40 feet of asphault( R/C runway edge) to take off from then the rest is grass ,

Profile is the most popular class of the event , very good flyers of all skill levels compete together . last year 18 entrants .. With all of the buzz , This year should be a bigger turnout

The gate should be open when the first person gets there Friday as I went by the field today and the county lock ,not ours is locked in the open position .

Thanks for the updates!

We will be in Huntersville sometime this evening. We are planning on getting in practice (might not do much good!) Saturday. A two year lay off with no flying at all is really not optimal to going to a contest.

Weather was perfect with almost no wind and very sunny and great fall weather . expect the same tomorrow

Just a word about the very high scores in old time. Neville and I used Pampa rules but used 10-40 points for all maneuvers. This gave us a lot of room to separate very good maneuvers from those that were just a little less in quality. Take off and landings made a big difference in the outcome. Some of the very best people had a small bounce in there landins. Ours is a grass field for old time and even the best old time flyers sometimes get a small hop and bounce. I never expected to see Dan get a perfect landing with a Ringmaster but he did it. One flyer got 40 points for takeoff and landing which is almost unheard of in Old Time Stunt. We had perfect weather all day so there was no advantage to fly early or late. Some made the comment to me that this was one off the highest levels of OT flying they had seen in a long time. All of the flyers did a great job of keeping it moving along as most of them were competing in other event. I got in the last flight of the day as the classic guys had to wait for me to finish judging so I could take my classic flight . I had a hard time getting the old time pattern out of my mind after watching 35 old time flights. I almost did a climb instead of a wingover in classic.

Myself and a good friend went to the Huntersville contest as spectators today and although we were there for a brief four hours we saw a lot of good flying. Congrats to the winners!

The icing on the cake was watching Todd Lee flying with his kids during the break and made the seven hours of driving worth it all!

PAMPA has two sets of OTS score sheets. One is the Garden State Circle Burners sheet with a increasing number of points available and the other set has a 1-10 judging with a K-factor to make the difference between difficulties of each maneuver. No matter the method, the judges did a wonderful job of shaking out 15 very fine flying pilots on Saturday. Bill Zimmer, Mark Overnier, Jim Renkar and a assorted other judges compiled the K-Factor system when it became difficult to find judges for OTS, when they looked at the GSCB method. Their method is fine, but the changing range made the judges say "find someone else" so the new K-Factor sheet should be available for those looking for new OTS judges.

My first contest I have actually competed in in some time at least 4 years.
I had a great time, I really, REALLY enjoyed seeing my old friends and making some new ones.

Probably a Serotta. The bike that Andy Hampsten won the 1988 Giro D,Italia was not a Serotta. The Serottas were breaking due to a bad batch of True Temper Tubing. Andy's winning bike was made by John Slawta of "LandShark" fame,(John and I met a couple of times). Andy paid John out of his pocket for the that winning ride. Also, Andy actually did not win the famous Gavia stage. It was won by Dutchman Eric Breukink. Andy actually placed second on the stage, but it setup his overall win at the Giro.
Yet, Andy is still to this day identified as "Mr. Gavia".
