How much does your Vector 40 weigh???
« on: August 16, 2007, 01:15:16 AM »
Calling all Vector 40 Pilots,

How much does your Vector 40 weigh, (without fuel) ?

I have an E-Vector 40 (a modified ARC), and would like to compare IC powered weights with my E-planes weight.

I would also be interested in hearing opinions on the "Max" weight that you think this 536 sq in plane can carry and still fly a competitive pattern. Wing loading is the issue. Power loading is not an issue, unless the weight goes over 65 oz.

Most weights I have read about seem to be in the 43 to 48 oz (dry) range. Please note in your replies if your plane is a Kit, ARC, or ARF. ...... TIA :-)

Regards,  H^^

Don't have a vector but would say about 14oz sq ft would be about the max you would want to try and fly competitively which puts the Vector 40 at about 52.5 ounces max.

My Vector was a Brodak kit and I overpainted it. It's final weight was 54 oz. I had Supre tigre 46 in it and it flew a very good pattern. The round manuvouers were really easy to fly. I used it for handle time so I would't wear out my Grinder and they flew really close to the same. :## :## :## HB~>

Jack Weston flies an electric Vector Arf on the east coast. A very nice bird he uses in Expert. Weight is around 54/55 ounces. His FP35 powered ARF Vector comes in around 44 ounces. The turn and corner on the e-bird, definitely good. I guess locating the square shaped brick battery pack close to the cg allows the plane to turn quick, even with the weight penalty.  Jack prefers electric power these days. But he's an electro-cute nine year old (9 is his mental age, don't ask about his physical age... he bights). The consistent even motor response is a big advantage, in Jack's opinion. Sitting in my canvas chair watching him do the figures... plane looks real good. Even tho I HATE electric. No noise, no smell, no edgy listening to a high strung ic engine, going in and out of song.

I was suprized when I weighed it altho I knew it was heavy and the balance was hard to get in. I put most of it in around and under the engine. I would like to build one that wieghed 47 ounces. I bet it would fly great. John thompsons flys good and it is a lot lightern than mine was. I like the plane because it gives big plane peformance in a small package. HB~>

Current ARC covered in ultracote with monocote trim and two light coats lustercote clear. Aerotiger .36, 4.5 oz wide wedge metal tank, 1 3/4 in aeroproducts needle nose spinner, chip muffler, and bolly 12 1/4 X 4 prop, 1 0z tip weight, = 47.5 oz. I have had 2 others, both arfs and both at similar weights, just spinner weight differences. This one is a tad lighter than the arf's because the spinner is an ounce heavier that the ultralight no backplate plastic spinner I had on the previous planes.

My Vector 40 ARF w/ST 46 & Aeroproducts tongue muffler weighs 48 ounces exactly.

Used 1 oz of tip weight as per instructions.  Haven't flown it yet, hopefully this week.  CG seems pretty close without any additional weight.

you might want to start with 2oz tip weight - just a heads up

Mine had the tendancy to hinge and "bang" through outsides until I added more tip weight

Hi every body,
What would be the target weight for vector 40?
I am working on a vector 40, scratch, wing has just been finished n it weighs around 10 oz., am I over weight?
What would be the max practical weight for electric and glow powered vector?Engine choices would be ASP 36, Os la 40 and 46? Which one would be a satisfying choice?

Regards,
Ehsan

Arc stated out at 46oz but now up to 53. One crash and I think a little oil in the tail, had to add nose weight. Still Flys great.

Eshan,
Is that 10 oz with bellcrank, horns, hinges, flaps, tips, leadout guide? If so, and I'd assume no t covered, it's pretty good.
Use the Aero Tigre 36 if you can find one, or LA 46. Bigger the better on the LA, it weighs less than the 40.
Make sure it's straight when you assemble it, help from some experienced guys is golden. I still have a buddy come over sometimes for the second pair of eyes.

All,

Thanks for posting your data.  My Magnum 40 is coming along pretty good, but I didn't really have a target weight.  I had an ARC Vector but never weighted it.  As mine sits (see Magnum 40 thread) it weighs in at 32oz with tank, muffler and motor.  I opted for a built up stab that's pretty light, and less wing tip material.

I weighed my wing out of curiousity.  Mine comes in at 11.5oz.  That also includes wing-mounted gear, wheels and mounting hardware.  I think you are on the right track.
