How many planes have you built?
« on: September 28, 2009, 01:56:14 PM »
How many Control-line planes have you built that you can consciencely remember?

I've built an Ares, a Smoothie, an ARF smoothie, a profile Fw-190, and I'm now building an Oriental Plus and a Cobra.  That's a total of 6, and I'm 99.9999% positive a lot of you have built more  ;D

Oh man, don't ask questions like that. I shudder to think of how many I have built, crashed and given away. Not counting planes built when I was a teenager, since coming back to stunt in the early 80s, I've built at least 40 planes.

5 or 6 classics, 4 or 5 PA planes of other's designs and the rest my own mistakes. I can say that I've only built 4 kits in the last 30 odd years. The rest are scratch built.

Lotta planes under the bridge or over the dam or whatever. A lot.

I had them all written down before the fire, but it's over 200 now and all CL. Add about 25 more if quick builds count.

Man thats a hard question!
combat fliers eat airplanes.
Gave away 2 pick up truck loads years ago.
Here are some pictures from a couple years ago, there is more now.
Some of the smaller ones are in boxes on shelves.
They wont get my hobbies until they pry them from my cold dead hands.

I think it is some kind of weird disease.

Oh my. That's a really difficult question...I need memory pills.I'm guessing 30-40 CL planes?

(Edit for clarification) plastics, rubber ff and RC models are too numerous to mention a count for.ARFs shouldnt be included here...period!

Let's see if you want me to include RC planes and Plastic Models (hey they count as planes), here would be my list.

Plastic Models:

F-14 Tomcat
Airbus A380
1903 Wright Flier
P-51 Mustang
B-17G
F8F Bearcat
P-38 Glacier Girl

Would you believe it, sitting here at the computer I can't remember all the plastic models I've built.

RC planes:

Spacewalker
Some type of trainer that I don't remember the name of.

CL planes:

Smoothie ARF
Fw-190 Profile
Smoothie ARC
Ares
Oriental Plus
Cobra.

That is a total of...15 planes, almost nothing compared to you guys.

Boy they do come up with some questions.  I can't remember how old I was when I started building the 10 cent Comet planes.  Won't count the many ready to fly rubber power.  Then I got an engine for Christmas.  First plane the A-J Aircraft Firebaby then the Scientific Sport Racer.  Couldn't afford much as a kid.  Worked picking apples and pears for a year or two, then two years working a riding stables with horses.  At one time we had 56 riders to take out on the trail.  So I really didn't keep track of what I built.  But, at one time I did have 50+ planes ready to fly, counting the Twiddle stick planes.  Right now I am putting new nose on the Arctic Fox.  Have two that have not been flown yet and working on four more planes that were scratch builds using two kits for patterns.  Back to covering.  DOC Holliday

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Here is a few of my more recent ones, along with a few that are over 30 years old. I have sold quite a few, but still have a few to many. Planning on building a couple of new ones this winter though.

Hundreds...literally.  I have about 40 or more hanging around right now, in my shop and mothballed out in the garage.  Occasionally I throw away a few of the more beat up ones.

I never used to have this problem, until my flying skills improved enough that I wasn't crashing constantly. I kept building at the same habituated rate, but they quit breaking...

I don't feel "right" unless I have a new build going on.

Randy,

About half of them were put away for storage, and I haven't seen them for a while.  Oh I just remembered another one, an Su-27 post including everything I've built is going to be edited.  I do know how many plastic model kits I do have left, which is not very many, and the one airplane kit I got is a Corsair.

And I've got a not even half built fuselage of a Guillows P-51 which is why I didn't count it.
