Okay - let's say you lucky enough to get a PA 40 Merlin ultra lite R.E.  ----- what plane would you put it in ?

Steve Buso Vegas with reduced aspect ratio (4 to 1 instead of 5) tail feathers that split 60-40 stab to elevator.

My Oriental Plus has had that motor in it all year, and flies it with ease, so that would be my recommendation  ;D

Well, that's a tough question. There are several from a light profile like Pathfinder to an Impact. Most any stunter from 600 to 700 square inches could be flown with the PA either with or without pipe. It's a good, solid and consistent engine.

I think Zuriel is wrapping a plane around one as I type this. I don't think his plans have been published yet.

Randy Smith designed Satona. Curt Contrada flew one into the Top5 in 2002.  It is an SV series plane but running around 630 squares.  Perfect fit for that motor.  At least I think so.

You would need to add some nose weight for that.  The 40 UL is much lighter than the regular PA 40 the plane was designed around.  But I bet it would be a killer motor in one of the Bear variants; I bet there is one that would be well suited to an 8.5 oz motor!

I have contemplated a Buccaneer 740 or a Legacy 40 with the advent of smaller models with .65.  Jim Aron's stunter at the Nats flew well with a .65 in a 585 square inch model.  Thus a PA 40UL should not be an over-powering event in the Buccaneer 740 (575 square inches) or the Legacy 40 with 565 square inches.  I would put the gear in the wing and use a trench for the pipe.  This makes pipe length adjustments easier and clearance less of a problem.  Using a quiet pipe will tone done the sound of the pipe in a trench.  Simply draw a side view which will hide the pipe.

I have this motor on pipe in an Oriental Plus, 605 inches. This model was recommended to me by an elite flyer when I asked him the same question at the Golden State contest two years ago.

Right you are Doug the Satona will work very well with this combo with a few very minor tweeks to the plane, nose moment and maybe trim the wing and stab down 1 inch
