Thank you Dane. You do not know how much we appreciate the pictures and any info from VSC. Those of us that are not there are there in spirit. Thank you again.
-
Thanks Dane
If you see Charlie Reeves and his running buddy Jim Lynch tell them I said howdy!

++++++on the Pics, cant get enough!

It sure is. Gaylord Elling's, I think.

Some really nice and interesting models.

Did the orange Stunt Rocket fly?

Thanks Dane and Jim Hoffman!
-
Thanks for sharing. Wish I could be there.
-
Thanks guys. My goal is to be able to update these and put names to planes. Stay tuned!
-
Thanks Dane.
-
Quick pit stop in Phoenix, not enough fuel capacity to hardline it from vegas to Tucson. Schucks.
-
In recent years, coverage of VSC, with photos, has favored Classic and those with the most "colorful" (and sometimes outlandish) paint work. Notably absent was mention of Old Time entries, and mention of Spark Ignition entries.
I'm pleased to see this coverage of ALL types this year.
-
Thanks for the kind words team. Today was ringmaster day. Let's see how many I can stuff into a post.
Pictured is Jim Hoffman testing his engine.
Last pic is team Gilbert test flying over the asphalt.
-
Had a small thermal/dust devil blow through mid-day today. Tore up Bob Brookins awning and then a whole bunch of models on display. Really sad! I'm sure somebody will have pictures.
-
Look out for team Gilbert. His support team is incredible. Go get'em Joe.
-
Years ago at VSC I got hit by a "Dust devil" on official flight, first time I ever even heard of one.
Barnstormer with four headbolt Fox 35 and original Y & O 10/5 prop. Powermist with added castor oil!
Brief and scary but it survived!
Don Boka.
-
"Dust Devils" -- back in my (1970-1980) Free Flight days at Taft & Elsinore, we called those things "Trash Movers"....which they certainly were!
-
Charlie Reeves flying his twin 1/2a plane.
-
Here are a couple of pics from Classic appearance judging.
-
Like Charlie's twin.
Jim's Volunteer is a great looking plane.
-
Here's a flight video. Gary Gingrich second round.

Two flights terminated and reflown later because dust devils came through the circle during their flights. Leroy Black, Jim Rhoades.

I could have used that at the 2003 TT.

Sounds like the dust devils are really wreaking havoc this year, better move VSC to Minnesota! ;D

I think this deserves it's own reply, maybe a new thread? Anyway, special guest speaker Mike Keville gave a nice history of VSC. There were several people who have been to all 30. He asked is this any ones first. I think I was the only one who raised a hand. I got to talk to Mike a while. We even had dinner at the same table, and had a few laughs. He complimented my box car chief. I feel fortunate to have met Mike, and I look forward to seeing him next year.
-
Thanks, Dane. For those who haven't yet met him, Dane (and others like him) are the future of this hobby. He's young (well, to ME anyway), enthusiastic, a fine builder and flyer -- and also a really nice guy. We hope to see him here again next year.
That photo, by the way, of him and that old geezer, was taken by Becky Dixon - Tom's wife - at the conclusion of the VSC-30 banquet.
-
Thank you very much sir. The banquet dinner is reason alone for people to flock to VSC. What a spread.
They gave thanks at the dinner to all the wonderful folks responsible for putting this on. The event itself is EXTREMELY well organized. Non stop flight after flight! Somehow, frantically fast paced, but relaxing and therapeutic at the same time.
Here's appearance judging pics. I didn't know that the judges actually move the planes to set up the rows, so I'm very sorry to not have taken pictures in order.
-
Please feel free to jump in with names to add to my pics. I was scrambling around trying to get my stuff together I forgot to take notes. These are resized and won't zoom well. If anyone wants a full size pic, send me a PM or email.
Jim Lynch's Humbler got pilots choice. I believe his Volunteer was third in the votes as well.

More appearance judging pics.

Appearance judging pics, and some cool fly by's at the field.

Here's Jim Hoffman. I left it as big as I could for this one post.
-
Thanks for the pics Dane. I haven't noticed it anywhere, who won Classic?
-
Oh, should have posted this first. Joe Gilbert won classic.
Bob McDonald won overall points and super 70's. Jim Hoffman won ringmaster OTS.
Please let me know if you can zoom in on these to see the standings.
-
Thanks again Dane, and congrats to Joe!
(pics aren't enlarging all that well, they do enlarge when clicked on but are still pretty grainy and hard to read)
-
These pics are from Jim Hoffman.

More pics from Jim.

Hi Dane,
Who won Ignition Old Time Stunt?
-
Let me try this again one at a time. Hopefully they're zoom worthy.
-
Other side.
-
Hi Dane,
Who won Ignition Old Time Stunt?
1st, Frank McMillan
2nd Jim Lee
3rd Glen Allison
4th Bob Brookins.
-
Hi Dane,
Thanks for the OTS Ignition results.
Do you have a picture of Joe Gilbert's Ringmaster that you could post here?
-
I'm still sorting and resizing. I don't think I have a pic of just his airplane.
-
Thanks Dane for doing all you have done at this years VSC for those of us that stayed home. Sure miss being there as there is such a great group of guys/gals there. H^^
-
Scott Dinger making a landing.
-
LeRoy Black flying his ringmaster. Gary Gingrich in the background.
-
Gaylord Elling flying S70's (I believe)
-
Keith Trostle flying his Chizler. I couldn't stop staring at this plane. My favorite!
-
From Jim Hoffman, Wednesday's group photo!
-
Thanks Dane and Jim for all the photos!
-
Some photos of the ‘Special demonstration Event’ ...a few unfortunately suffered ‘dust devil rash’.

As you scroll through these pictures taken by Dane, there is a very nice 1959 Bob Palmer Thunderbird II with my name underneath.
It was built from scratch by Don Hutchinson, using his own hand drawn plans. Don has been unable to attend the VSC for a few years, so I have exhibited some of his planes (Moitle) in the Exhibition Event. I actually entered Don's T-Bird and flew it in Classic this year.
It was trimmed out for Don's flying style and I had some difficulty getting it trimmed to the point where I could be relatively assured to bring it home in one piece. That trimming avoided me completely, then, Bob Whitley joined me on the grass circle one morning and we flew for about two hours, he helping me all the way. Larger handle, closer line spacing, raise this line, lower that one...suddenly, the plane flies GREAT! The motor, which I had deemed uncontrolable, came into its own as Bob simply listened to it carefully and needled it ever so slightly.... it began running, you guessed it... GREAT!
Forty-four ozs, Randolph dope, Magnum 36XL, Phelps prop, 20% nitro Sig 11/11. Talk about a good, no, GREAT VSC, this was it!
So much thanks to Bob Whitley, who, as SoCal Air Traffic boss, bossed me around the LA Basin in days of yore. Again, Thanks.
Next, the VSC banquet comes along with its usual special moments, it always has those, and to my surprise, Mark Gerber calls me to the podium to receive, on Don's behalf, the "Bob Palmer" award for 2018's best Palmer design, presented by Jerry Higgins.
Thanks, Don,
dale g
PS: Huge Thank Youse to Jim Hoffman, Mark Smith, John Callentine, Leroy Black, Lew Wolgast, Gary Gingrich, all Ya'll, for putting on this fantastic show.
-
Yes Bob is one fine gentleman and you too. Glad you got the award. H^^
