Hot Dogs at the Golden State Practice Sessions!
« on: October 06, 2010, 12:00:14 AM »
Hi All; At least "all" that are coming to the Golden State Championships in Clovis, and would like to practice on the preceding Thursday and Friday. As posted on another thread, the PC Flyers (NO, not "politically correct") will again be hosting the practice field and free (Yes . . . FREE  #^ #^ #^) bbq hot dog lunch both days. I'm the guy that drew the "you're the cook" straw so I'm getting ready to plan the food. Last year we drew about 20 flyers on Friday, and I'm figuring about the same of flyers on Friday this year. I'm just curious how many might show up on Thursday? We will have 3 circles set up, so room is not an issue! While not necessary, if you think you might be there on Thursday, let me know . . . I sure don't want to run out of Hot Dogs! (And I'm sure I won't, I'll bring plenty!   y1 y1) By the way, if you missed the other thread, we do have some "dry" RV camping spaces available from Thursday PM through EARLY morning (like 6am!) Sunday for those RV'ers that might like a free spot to park. (We have to have the parking lot vacated and ready for church by 6am on Sundays, so that time is a deadline for us.) The flying circles are all on grass by the way.

Thanks, and I'm really looking forward to this years contest!!! A great big "C/L" thanks to Howard Rush and Richard Walbridge for CD'ing the event! Great job guys!

Brian

PS: I'll be practicing too, so sorry if the hot dogs taste a tad like castor oil . . . I'll try to burn them black so you don't notice.  LL~ LL~

Hi Brian,

I think there will be enough Castor oil floating around, so if ya don't taste it you're going to smell it. I'm sorry maybe I can add some oil smell when I'm flying my Stiletto, she doesn't even make much noise???? Looking forward to all the great people playing with us and yes thank you to Howard and Rich for being the C/D's of the Contest. Its a lot of work but it makes a great time for the rest of the group. If ya haven't signed up for this contest ya going to miss the greatest contest in Fresno, Ca Gary

I'm very surprised, but it appears that the wifey  mw~ has given her approval for going to the GSSC. Usually, I just leave a note, telling her where I've gone and when I will probably be back.  LL~  Still have to float this by those nits at work...

Got a little leverage today with the wife. Came home to find the cordless phone handset MIA. Looked for about a half hour, until I found it in the linen closet...battery totally dead, of course.  Any ideas about chaining it to the end table where it belongs?  DK^  Steve

Bring the wife there is plenty of good stores for the wife in good old Fresno. I'm sure some of the wifes around here could direct her to all the good places that will take your money????? Hey!!!!! look at it this way???? It would make your toys look very cheap and maybe she might let you get another toy????? (IF THERE IS ANY MONEY AFTER HER TRIP TO ALL THE GREAT STORES HERE IS FRESNO!!!!!!) Yes Howard!!!!! I'm a fan of Mr. Windy!!!!

Gary  (Remember Steve, we'll even let your wife have free tube steaks, so you would be taking her out to dinner????)

Hi guys,

I want to thank all that showed up at our field and made it a great success. We had three circles going hot and heavy. For those that didn't make it to our field, they missed two great flying days. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Our cook was very busy cooking tube steaks with all the trimmings. I believe we had three that dry camped for the contest. The church did a great job cutting the lawn for us. Maybe in the future we'll put on a fun fly or something of interest. There was fuel engines and electric flying, a lot of different interesting plane and designs. I tried to take some pictures and if I can get them loaded on to the computer I'll share them. Special thanks to our cook Brian Massey for all the work he did to make our fun fly at our field a success.

Gary, that practice field is fantastic!  Antone Kephart and I were one of the "dry campers" and it sure beat the Wal-Mart parking lot.  And with Tahoe Joe's steakhouse and Country Waffles in walking distance, it is heaven!

The field was mowed sufficiently for even my single, narrow-wheeled .061 Kwikee Sky Fire to take off.  Weather was fantastic, should have saved that for Saturday and Sunday, but you take what you can get.

We had lunch with us, but the Hot Dogs would have been very welcome otherwise (not on the "list" at home, you know).  Thank everyone who was involved for a great experience.  To quote the Governator "I'll be back!"    y1  H^^

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the kind words. Our club is small so it would be hard to hold a contest but there is several that has told me if we decided to have something they would help. Not sure what it would be, probably a fun fly for both electric and fuel planes, maybe a dinner to go with the fun fly. If there was some kind of contest or fun fly close bye, might combine  the two. Would have to figure out something that would bring the fliers to our field. I believe what we have to offer is very doable. The church doesn't charge us any money to use the field and we have several different types of eating places within walking distance. I would have to schedule any group flying with the church to be sure the field wasn't being used for something else. I enjoyed seeing our field being used bye all the fliers, it was really a fun day.

Thanks to All

A fun fly would be the way to go for a small group.  The one in Springfield Missouri(for Floyd) had a decent turn out for this area.  You could always take up a colection for the Church, as I doubt they would turn it down.  It is great to fly when a person wants to, not when it is required, like in competition.   H^^

Gary,
in reality, it takes very few people to run a weekend stunt contest, well it does depend upon the level of entries. Most of the time, judges come from people flying in other classes, you need a CD,and then general help to setup. beyond that, you can run a stunt contest with the contestants pretty much, just like a fun fly.

JUst to be clear, a smaller stunt contest, not one with 25 or 30 entries,,

Hi Larry; I hope you do come back, and eat some of my now famous "Castor Dogs" #^  #^ Gary and I chatted today about making next years practice session even better! Glad you had fun and hope everyone else did too.

Yea, too bad about the weather.   HB~> Sunday I had wind related issues (no, not "that" kind of wind) and wound up scoring no points . . . oh well, I'm already looking forward to next year.

And yes, Tahoe Joe's is my favorite steak house!!

Hi Jim,

I was with the Clovis Control Line Club many years ago, here in Clovis. Bob Ellis, Gid, Rob Nelson and many others used to belong to this club. Was you a member of this club?? This club used to run the Golden State Contest, worked on several of the contest when we had it at Clovis High School on Fowler Ave. in Clovis. If you live in the area come and have fun with us at People's Church on Sunday Afternoon around two o'clock. Look forward to seeing ya, Gary

Hi Brett,

Rob Nelson was in the Clovis Control Liner Club also. Rob and I used to help Bob and Gid with the Golden State Contest, yes many years ago. Rob had just moved up to expert and flew in a few contest when the club just disappeared. Rob is a lot of fun and a great builder and flier. I believe Rob has sold off his fuel plane and engines. I Believe he is going to try out electric. Rob has been talking with Roger about Roger's set ups and I'm not sure which plane Rob is going to use but it will be nice to have him back at our field.

Brett thanks for helping out at the contest, without guys like you there would be no contest. Maybe next year you'll be able to find time to come play at our field. Gary
